The Rotary Club of San Marcos held their annual banquet on Wednesday night to install their new officers, say farewell to their exchange student and to reflect on the past year.
David Bandy, President of D.L. Bandy Constructors, officially shed his President-Elect role and took the keys to the San Marcos Rotary Club for the 2008-2009 year. He will be supported with the help of his new officers in the coming year. Tom Brooks will assume the role of President-Elect, Sammy Falletta will hold the role of Secretary and Steve Searle will be Sergeant at Arms for the coming year. In addition, Tracy Herman and Richard Skidmore will serve the board as Directors at Large. This group of community leaders plan on a great year of giving back to San Marcos.
The Rotarians also welcomed Jayson Fritz from Fredricksberg, Texas who serves this area as the Rotary District Governor.
The group recognized former leader Pastor Eddie Valverde from the First United Methodist Church in San Marcos. He was referred to as a friend to Rotary. All spoke of his donation of time and effort to this community.
The Rotarians also gave special awards to Shirley Austin which has perfect attendance over the last seven years and Gary Gooche for 10 years. These two collectively have made over 850 straight meetings.
Bandy laid his plans for the coming year by stating, “We are expected to lead by example to others.” “I take great pride in my position in the Rotary of San Marcos. I want to thank everyone for inviting me here five years ago.”
Bandy spoke of bringing their ideas in to make this a better community. Bandy’s goals are to develop a program to benefit San Marcos High School students, utilize the group’s knowledge and he wants to use both local and national matching funds to benefit San Marcos.
The group also said farewell to their exchange student, Petr Laznicka, from the Czech Republic, he set two school swim records while at San Marcos High School in the last year. He said, “This was the best year of my life, thanks for San Marcos and the Rotary.”
Laznicka added,” I will miss Texas, because there are no hamburgers or Lockhart barbeque in the Czech Republic.”
Also, the club noted that they will meet again on Wednesday, July 2nd at noon at the Price Senior Center on 222 W. San Antonio in San Marcos.
