Texas State’s dean of students appointed San Marcos Academy president

STAFF REPORT

John Garrison, Texas State University’s associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, has been named San Marcos Baptist Academy’s new president, the Baptist Standard reports.

Garrison holds a bachelor’s of arts degree from McMurry University, a master’s of education degree from the University of North Texas, and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. He succeeds Vic Schmidt, who plans to retire July 1.

His appointment comes as San Marcos Academy celebrates its centennial. It held its first class in September 1908 on 56 acres donated by the city of San Marcos, whose citizens raised $40,000 for the school. The school is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

John and Carol Garrison have two grown children: Ryan, a San Marcos resident, and Mindy, who lives in College Station.
