Southland Places 11 throughout both teams
Murfreesboro, TN – The American Baseball Coaches Association released the 2008 South Central All-Region teams Wednesday afternoon and Texas State Bobcats Zach Tritz, Paul Goldschmidt, Lance Loftin and Thomas Field were each named as second team selections.
The foursome joins seven other Southland Conference players named to the All-Region teams, as well.
Tritz, a Spring, Texas native, shares the third place seat with Ryan Berry (Rice), Wes Musick (Houston) and Matt Ridings (Western Kentucky). The junior concluded his first season with the Bobcats tying a single-season seventh-place record with 9-4 year-ending win total. Tritz held the Sunday starting role with 14 appearances on the mound and threw four complete games in his 91.2 innings pitches. He ended the year with a 4.22 earned run average.
Joining the pitcher is three-parts of the Texas State infield as Goldschmidt takes second team first base honors, as well as Field at shortstop and Loftin at third base.
Goldschmidt, who snagged SLC Hitter of the Year accolades, wrapped up his sophomore season with a team-best .360 batting average. The slugger led the league in eight offensive categories, including a conference-high 17 home runs that fell one mark shy of tying a Texas State single-season record. The Woodlands native, scored 59 runs, while batting in 69 and recorded 82 hits, 22 combined doubles and triples and closed out the year with a .990 fielding percentage.
Loftin backed Goldschmidt as Texas State’s second-highest offensive contributor with a .358 batting average. The newcomer recorded 73 hits and 28 multi-base hits that included 12 home runs and recorded 59 RBI in his junior season. The Waco native earned SLC Hitter of the Week honors during the final week of conference play against UTSA, pounding out six hits, four of which were home runs for ten RBI.
Field shares second-team shortstop honors with Nick Arata (Florida Atlantic) and Ty Summerlin (SLU). The junior was one of two Bobcats drafted in the 2008 First-Year player draft and was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 24th round (737th overall). The Hewitt native attached his name to numerous Texas State records during his tenure. Last season, the shortstop matched a single-season record 61 runs scored and bypassed the mark this year with 66 total runs. Field led the conference in triples with seven this season and finished fourth in total runs scored and seventh overall with 81 hits. Field was an SLC first team selection and was named SLC Hitter of the Week for his performance against UTPA and Central Arkansas. His year-ending totals include a .338 batting average with 14 doubles and ten home runs and a .963 fielding percentage.
Other SLC selections include pitchers Brian Sisk (LU, 1st team), Wade Mile (SLU, 2nd team) and Omar Gutierrez (TAMUCC, 2nd team). UTSA’s Michael Rockett earned first team outfield honors and Keith Stein and Bobby Verbick of Sam Houston State were named to the second team outfield and designated hitter, respectively.
