San Marcos police are investigating what began as a reported armed robbery on Memorial Day outside a drug store on Hopkins Street.

An officer on patrol about 9:41 p.m. Monday was flagged down by a man who said he had been robbed in the parking lot of the CVS pharmacy, 920 Texas Hwy. 80, said San Marcos police Sgt. Mike Wellman. A vehicle leaving the store’s parking lot at a “high rate of speed” was stopped up the street by another police officer, Wellman said, resulting in the arrest of three men.

Argeo Inray Salgado-Ortega, 30, Saul Romero, 44, and Luis Alberto Pineda-Ayala, 26, are all being held in the Hays County jail, charged with aggravated robbery. However, Wellman said the investigation, joined now by the Hays County district attorney’s office, is far from over.

“It’s a very long story and we’re still at the beginning of our investigation. It’s not one of those where something happened, we made an arrest and we consider the case closed,” Wellman said. He said resolving the incident has been complicated by a language barrier between authorities and both the alleged victim and suspects.

Consequently, Wellman said, the police department and district attorney’s office are not releasing many details including what kind of weapon or weapons were involved. He said the incident occurred outside the store and did not involve CVS employees.
