Get your picnic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs packed. San Marcos Performing Arts Association and the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department are making the final preparations for the annual free Summer in the Park outdoor concert series.
With support from the San Marcos Arts Commission and the Series Sponsors – San Marcos Academy and Texas Nursing and Rehab of San Marcos, Summer in the Park will be celebrating their twenty-second year of performances beginning Thursday, June 5 at the San Marcos Plaza Park Stage.
The season will kick off with a performance by the Texas State University Swing Band sponsored by the Noon Lions Club. This 10-piece musical group of students and faculty is dedicated to performing the classic favorites of the Big Band era. Their repertoire includes many hits of such great dance orchestras as the Count Basie and Glen Miller bands.
Members of the Texas State Swing Band have been invited to perform at some of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals, including the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Antibes Jazz Festival in France. The ensemble consists of three saxophones, two trumpets, one trombone, piano, bass, and drums. Freddie Mendoza, Director of Jazz Studies at Texas State, directs the band.
