WACO – This was not the slugfest that these two teams played earlier in the year but the result was the same at Ferrell Stadium. The Baylor Bears who won 25-13 at Bobcat Field also won at home with a 7-2 victory over Texas State. The Bears now hold a 33-11 advantage over the `Cats at Ferrell. The Bobcats out hit Baylor on the night 8-6 but the Bears were able to combine them together at key times.
Paul Goldschmidt (batting .351 with 2 outs) hit a 2 out double in the top of the 1st but the Bobcats were unable to capitalize on the hit. Pitcher Brian Borski (0-1 on the season 6.25 ERA) was the starter for Texas State and he struck out the first batter he faced and did not give up a hit to end the 1st inning. The first three Bobcats got base hits in the top of the 2nd inning. Catcher Ben Theriot (batting .515 when leading off) led things off with a single but was thrown out trying to steal 2nd base. Elliot Babcock was up next and singled up the middle. Aaron Fuller then followed with hit 2nd home run of the season to give the ‘Cats a 2-0 lead. Two of the next three Bobcat batters struck out to end their half of the 2nd inning. The Bears got a 1 out single but hit into 2 groundout to end the inning with Texas State leading 2-0. It was a quick 3rd inning for the Bobcats. A fly out and 2 strike outs and it was time for Baylor to bat. The Bears went down just as quickly getting 2 groundouts and a strike out. After 3 innings the Bobcats lead 2-0 and Borski had only given up 1 hit.
Babcock hit a 1 out single in the 4th but two fly outs ended the Bobcat inning. Borski had another great inning giving up only a walk to end the Bear 4th inning. Three consecutive strikeouts was all the Bobcats could manage in the 5th inning. Baylor managed a bases loaded single to tie the game and end the night for Borski. Aaron Taylor came on as the reliever but he also gave up 2 runs and the Bears took the lead 4-2 after 5 innings. Goldschmidt opened the 6th inning with a single but the next batter hit into a double play and the Bobcats were held scoreless. Kane Holbrooks came into the game as the Bobcat pitcher and he was able to get the Bears out in order in the 6th inning.
Jonathan Farrow (batting .356 with 2 outs) hit a 2 out single and then advanced to 2nd on passed ball. The next batter grounded out though to leave Farrow on base though and end the top of the 7th. Holbrooks got the Bears out in order again to make it 6 outs in a row. Thomas Field led off with a single to open up the 8th inning but the next 3 batters struck out. Josh Walter was the new pitcher for the Bobcats and he allowed a 3 run home run to bring the score to 7-2 Baylor. The Bobcats went down in order in the 9th to end the game with Baylor winning.
Borski and Holbrooks both pitched very well. Borski went 4.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on only 3 hits while Holbrooks sat down the 6 Bears he faced. Goldschmidt (2 for 4 with a double), Babcock (2 for 4, 1 run) and Fuller (1 for 4, Home Run, 2 RBI’s, 1 Run) led the team from the plate.
