Texas State Softball Take 2 Of 3 At McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La — The Texas State softball team went 2-1 over the weekend against the Cowgirls from McNeese State (22-35, 15-14) to end the season with a 35-17 overall and a 25-5 conference record. The 25-5 conference record makes them the top seed in the Southland Conference Tournament that will be hosted by the Bobcats.

The fans saw another dominating performance by pitcher Ragan Blake in game 1 of the series. Blake got the win to go 19-10 on the season. She recorded her 8th shutout of the season, pitching 7 innings giving up 0 runs on 5 hits while striking out 7. The ‘Cats got all the runs they needed in the 1st inning when they put up 2 runs on 3 hits. Ryan Kos scored the first run when she scored after McKenzie Baack stole 2nd. The next batter was Leah Boatright who doubled scoring Baack. Texas State was only able to manage 2 more hits for the game. Each team ended with 5 hits apiece while Texas State committed 3 errors in the game. McNeese State kept coming up short late in the game when they stranded 2 runners in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings. Alex Newton led the team offensively going 2 for 3.

The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st in game two when Jill Kloesel scored an unearned run. McNeese State put up 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the 1st to take their first lead of the series. They followed that up with 2 runs in the 4th and 3 in the 5th to take a 7-1 lead after 5 innings. Texas State was only able to manage 2 hits during the 2nd through 5th innings. They were able to put up a run in the 6th off of one more hit when Alex Newton scored on a Taylor Hall ground out. In the top of the 7th, trailing 7-2, the Bobcats loaded the bases with one out. Newton followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Tello for the first run of the inning. McKenzie Baack then followed her with a 3 run home run that scored Lacey Duncan and Kloesel to bring the score to 7-6. That last batter grounded out to end the game giving the victory to the Cowgirls. McNeese State out hit Texas State 11-6 for the game. Elizabeth Dennis took the loss and is now 3-2 on the season. Kloesel (0 for 2, 2 runs), Baack (2 for 4, 1 run, 3 RBI’s) and Leah Boatright (2 for 4) led the team from the plate.

Game three was the final game of the season for both teams. Neither team managed a hit until the top of the 3rd. After the first two Bobcat batters struck out, Ashton Peters singled and then scored on Kristina Tello’s triple. McNeese State got one hit in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings but did not score. In the top of the 6th, the ‘Cats put up 3 runs on 5 hits to take a 4-0 lead. Tamara Keller who was pinch running for Peters who opened up the inning with a double scored the first run on a Jill Kloesel single. Alex Newton followed that with a single that brought in Tello. McKenzie Baack was up next and she singled also to bring in Kloesel. McNeese State made it close in the 7th when they scored a run and loaded the bases but pitcher Ragan Blake was able to get out of the jam to earn her 20th game of the season. The Bobcats were led at the plate by Tello (2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Kloesel (1 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Peters (3 for 3, 1 run).

Texas State will now return home and prepare for the 2008 Southland Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by the Bobcats May 8-10. Texas State’s first game in the Tournament will be Friday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. as one of two semifinal games in the tournament. The official tournament field and bracket pairings will be announced Monday.
