The City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department and Time Warner Cable have teamed up again to bring an exciting summer of Movies in Your Park to San Marcos Plaza. Joining the team this year will be the San Marcos Daily Record who will be participating as a media sponsor of the series.
What began several years ago with a small screen has grown to be a favorite family event during the summer months.
Rodney Cobb, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department explained that the city recently purchased an outdoor movie system that includes a large inflatable screen and projection system. Cobb stated, “This system will allow us to bring free movies to the public on a regular basis. In previous years, we would have shown three or four movies during the summer. With family budgets tightening and gas prices skyrocketing, it will be nice to provide this free activity for our citizens.” Cobb envisions a “weekly night out for families to come to the park, swim in the river, have a picnic dinner, and then settle in for a movie under the stars.”
Time Warner Cable is underwriting the cost to show twelve outdoor movies at the series. TWC Public Affairs Manager, Donna Hill, stated, “Time Warner Cable is committed to our communities. This program is one way for us to give back, especially to families with children. As a mom and grandmother, I can appreciate opportunities during the summer for family outdoor time. With Movies in Your Park, kids and parents alike can meet friends in the park for a weekly community play date. Our relationship with the Parks and Recreation Department is strong and we support their mission to provide free and fun entertainment for families.”
The San Marcos Daily Record will be covering all information about this series as well as providing incentives to moviegoers with coupons in the newspaper for chances to win special prizes and offers.
The season will begin with a pre-summer showing of the movie Ratatouille on Friday, May 9. The movie will begin at 8:30pm – but don’t wait until the last minute to arrive. Pre-movie activities will begin at 7:30pm and will include active games for kids of all ages. Lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray are encouraged. Concessions will be available.
Twelve movies are scheduled in all, including Surf’s Up, Veggie Tales: The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything, Nancy Drew, RV, Shrek 3, Evan Almighty, Bee Movie, Kicking and Screaming, Daddy Day Camp, Hairspray, and The Spiderwick Chronicles. The summer series will begin June 10 and continue through August 19.
Movies will be held every Tuesday and will begin as soon as the sun has set for the evening. Look for more information and a schedule of upcoming movies in the San Marcos Daily Record.
