The Texas State (33-16, 23-4) softball team swept the Bearkats from Sam Houston State (29-28, 14-13) over the weekend and clinched the Southland Conference regular season title. The Bobcats now holds a 4 ½ game lead in the standings over the Ladyjacks from Stephen F. Austin. There are only 4 games to play in the regular season though, so the Bobcats locked up the regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament that Texas State will host May 8-10. This was the last home game for the team which honored the four seniors (Ragan Blake, Kelsey Cammarata, Jill Kloesel and Ashton Peters) on the 2008 squad.The Bobcats got a run in the 1st inning of game one on Saturday when Kristina Tello scored on a Leah Boatright single. The ‘Cats starting pitcher Ragan Blake was spectacular throughout the game. She did not allow a SHS runner to get to 2nd base until they hit a double to open the 7th inning. Blake went the full 7 innings, giving up 0 runs on 4 hits while striking out 8. With the win, she is now 16-10 on the year. After getting 2 hits in the 1st inning, the Bobcat batters were only able to get 1 more for the game. The game ended with 7 total base hits. Three for Texas State and 4 for Sam Houston State.

The Bearkats once again had to face pitcher Ragan Blake in the 2nd game of the doubleheader Saturday night. This time, they were able to get a run on the board when they scored in the 1st inning when their 2nd batter hit a home run. The Bobcats responded by getting a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st. Kristina Tello drew a walk to start the inning and advanced to 2nd on a bunt by Ryan Kos. The next batter, Alex Newton then delivered a double to left center to plate Tello. The last two batters struck out and popped out to strand 2 runners. Blake was once again dominant as she did not allow another hit through the 6th inning. In the bottom of the 6th, McKenzie Baack homered to right center to put the Bobcats out in front 2-1 entering the 7th inning. Sam Houston State got runners on 1st and 2nd with a single and walk but Blake got the last batter to pop out to end the game. Blake once again pitched a complete game to get the win. She is now 17-10 on the year after pitching 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 2 hits and striking out 4. Baack (2 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Ashton Peters (2 for 2) were the leaders at the plate. Texas State out hit Sam Houston State 8 to 2 for the game.

Texas State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game three on Sunday. Alex Newton started things off in the 1st inning with a 2 out single. She then scored on a McKenzie Baack single. Jenna Emery brought in the last 2 runs of the 1st inning with a double to right field that scored Leah Boatright and Baack. Ragan Blake was on the mound again for the 3rd consecutive game and she got 9 of the 1st 10 batters she faced out in the first 3 innings. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Texas State scored 6 runs on 6 hits. Jill Kloesel scored the 1st run of the inning when Baack reached on a fielders choice. Leah Boatright followed with a bunt single to bring in Alex Newton. Ashton Peters brought in 2 more runs with a bases loaded double to center field to bring in Boatright and Baack. Kelsey Cammarata was next and she singled to left field to bring in Emery for the 5th run of the inning. Peters scored the 6th and final run of the inning when she scored on a passed ball. After 3 innings, the ‘Cats led 9-0. The Bearkats came close to scoring in the 4th but a runner was thrown out at home before the inning ended. They did manage to score in the 5th inning to make the score 9-1 but it was not enough to keep the game going as the Bobcats run ruled the Bearkats 9-1 in 5 innings. Blake picked up her 3rd win of the series and is now 18-10 on the season. She pitched another complete game going 5 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits. The Bobcats were led offensively by Newton (2 for 2, 2 runs), Baack (1 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s), Boatright (2 for 3, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Emery (2 for 3, 1 run, 2 RBI’s) and Peters (1 for 2, 1 run, 2 RBI’s). Texas State collected 10 hits to Sam Houston States 3 base hits.

Pitcher Ragan Blake was spectacular. She pitched every inning of the entire series. Blake got all 3 wins while pitching 19 innings, giving up only 2 runs on 9 hits. The Bobcats were led at the plate by McKenzie Baack (3 for 7, 3 runs, 3 RBI’s), Ashton Peters (3 for 6, 1 run, 2 RBI’s), Alex Newton (4 for 8, 2 runs, 1 RBI) and Leah Boatright (4 for 7, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s).
Texas State will close out its 2008 regular season with a three game series at McNeese State May 3-4 before hosting the 2008 Southland Conference Tournament May 8-10.
