Texas State goes 1-2 vs. Lamar in Baseball Series

The Texas State (24-18, 14-7) baseball team lost two games in extra innings before winning 8-1 on Sunday against Lamar (26-17, 14-7). Lamar is one of the top teams in the East Division (tied for 1st with Northwestern state before Sundays game) while Texas State is in 2nd place in the West Division (3 games behind UTSA).The Bobcats put up 2 runs in the 1st inning of game one played on Friday night. Thomas Field opened the inning up with a walk. Field then scored when Elliott Babcock followed him with a double to center field. Babcock was able to score later in the inning on a Laurn Randell single. Pitcher Mike Hart made it through the first 4 innings only giving up 3 hits. Adam Witek homered to left field in the bottom of the 4th to make the score 3-0. Lamar got solo home runs in the 5th and 6th inning to tighten the score to 3-2 after 6 innings. The Cardinals took the lead for the first time in the top of the 8th when they put up 2 runs on 2 hits to take a 4-3 lead. Hart left after the 8th inning giving up 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 8. Josh Walter came in to pitch the 9th and gave up a hit but allowed 0 runs. Randell got a 1 out walk in the 9th. Witek singled him to 2nd and he then advanced to 3rd when Ben Theriot was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Spenser Dennis followed up with a single to left filed to bring in Randell to tie the score at four. The next 2 batters got out to end the inning stranding 3 Bobcat runners and send the game into extra innings. Lamar was able to get an unearned run on 0 hits in the top of the 10th to take the lead 5-4. In the bottom of the 9th, Paul Goldschmidt hit a 1 out single to get on base but was picked off base for the 2nd out. Lance Loftin singled to get on with 2 outs and he advanced to 2nd on a Randell single to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. The next batter struck out though to end the game. Walter took the loss and is now 3-2 on the season. He gave up 0 earned runs on 1 hit while striking out 2. Babcock (1 for 5, 1 run, 1 RBI), Randell (2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Witek (2 for 5, 1 run, 1 RBI) led the team at the plate. Texas State out hit Lamar for the game 9 hits to 8.

Texas State once again scored first when they took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning of game 2 on Saturday. Elliott Babcock who was hit by a pitch scored when Paul Goldschmidt doubled to left center. Pitcher Steven Siers held the Cardinals scoreless in the first 2 innings before giving up an unearned run in the 3rd to tie the game at 1 apiece. Lamar did earn a few runs in the top of the 4th with a grand slam to take the lead 5-1. Texas State responded with a big inning in the 5th. Ben Theriot got on with a 1 out double and then scored when Spenser Dennis singled up the middle. Thomas Field came up 2 batters later and hit a 2 run 2 out home run to left center. Babcock scored when Lance Loftin singled and on a Lamar error. Paul Goldschmidt was able to score on wild pitch and the Bobcats took the lead 6-5. Adam Witek was up next and hit a triple to right center that scored Laurn Randell and Loftin. The next batter flied out to end the inning. The Bobcats scored 7 runs on 6 hits to take an 8-5 lead after 5 innings. Siers gave up 2 hits to the Cardinals in the 6th but did not give up a run and then he sat them down in order in the top of the 7th. At the plat in the 6th and 7th inning, the Bobcats went 6 up and 6 down. Lamar chased Siers after one out in the 8th with a 2 run home run to tighten the score at 8-7. Texas State stranded 2 runners in the bottom of the 8th. Lamar then got a leadoff triple in the top of the 9th and the runner scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 8. Texas State got a runner to 2nd base in the bottom of the 9th but could not score to put the game into extra innings for the 2nd night in a row. Lamar was again able to get a run in the top of the 10th to take a 9-8 lead. Three ground outs in the bottom of the 10th ended the game and gave the Bobcats their 2nd consecutive extra inning loss to the Cardinals. Pitcher Josh Walter took the loss for the 2nd consecutive night and he is now 3-3 on the season. The Bobcats were led offensively by Field (1 for 5, 1 run, 2 RBI’s), Babcock (1 for 3, 2 runs), Goldschmidt (1 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Loftin (1 for 5, 1 run, 1 RBI), Witek (1 for 5, 2 RBI’s) and Dennis (1 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI). Lamar collected 9 hits on the night while Texas State recorded 8 base hits).

For the 3rd game in a row, Texas State took an early lead in the 1st inning, going up 1-0 on Sunday. Paul Goldschmidt singled to score Thomas Field for the run. The Bobcats stranded 3 runners in the 1st inning. Texas State got another run in the 2nd inning when Ben Theriot who opened the inning with a double scored on a Aaron Fuller foul out. Zach Tritz was the starting pitcher and he was in great form early on, only giving up 4 hits through the first 5 innings of play. The ‘Cats put up 2 more runs on 2 hits in the bottom of the 5th inning. Adam Witek provided the key hit with a single that scored Lance Loftin and Goldschmidt to make the score 4-0. Texas State made it 5-0 in the 6th when Fuller scored on a sacrifice bunt by Elliott Babcock. Tritz only allowed 2 more hits to the Cardinals during their 6th, 7th and 8th innings. The Bobcats got 2 more runs in the bottom of the 8th when Field tripled to bring in Spenser Dennis and Ben Theriot. Elliott Babcock then plated Field when he followed up with a double to right center. The next two Bobcat batters grounded and fouled out with the score now 8-0. Lamar finally got on the board in the top of the 9th with a 2 out single. The game ended with the Bobcats winning 8-1. Tritz pitched a complete game to pick up the win. He now has a record of 8-1. For the game, he gave up 1 hit on 8 hits while striking out 4. The Bobcats were led at the plate by Field (2 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s), Babcock (2 for 4, 2 RBI’s), Goldschmidt (2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Witek (2 for 3, 2 RBI’s), Theriot (1 for 3, 2 runs) and Fuller (1 for 2, 1 run, 1 RBI). Texas State out hit Lamar 12-8 for the game.

For the series, Texas State was led at the plate by Elliot Babcock (4 for 12, 3 runs, 3 RBI’s) and Adam Witek (5 for 13, 1 run, 5 RBI’s). The Bobcats next game will be on Tuesday in Austin to play the Texas Longhorns.
