The San Marcos Rattlers have placed six athletes in the Class 5A Region IV track meet this weekend in San Antonio.
Five of the athletes are girls and four are members of the mile relay team. Eloy Collazo, the track coach at San Marcos High School, isn’t expecting miracles of his young athletes, though, as he said, “You never know.”
The mile relay team is composed of freshmen Kathryn Walpole and Solona Dever, along with sophomores Gina Miaiaszek and Meaghan Rodriguez. Their best time this year is 4:08, which almost certainly wouldn’t qualify them for the state meet in Austin next week.
“I’m sure all the San Antonio schools are under four minutes,” Collazo said. “For us, with a young group, it’s a matter of getting better and coming along.”
Melissa Neal, a senior, has qualified in four events or the regional meet. She has hit personal bests this year of 12.7 seconds in the 100 meters, 25.6 in the 200 and 1:01 in the 400.
Aaron Canady, competing in the triple jump, is the only boy from San Marcos High to qualify for the regional meet.
