Women's Basketball Holds Annual Awards Banquet

Senior class honored after SLC title season

Texas State women’s basketball held its annual awards ceremony banquet on Monday to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments from the Bobcats’ 21-11 Southland Conference Championship season.

Seniors Brooke DeGrate, Joyce Ekworomadu and Marie Moser were also honored for their roles on a women’s basketball squad that recorded the highest win total in over 30 years and won its first regular season Southland Conference title. Texas State’s 2007-08 women’s basketball team also became the first Bobcat basketball team for either men’s or women’s to win a postseason tournament game since Texas State became an NCAA Division I institution.

Ekworomadu was named the team’s Most Valuable Player after leading the team in scoring and free throw shooting while finishing second in rebounding and three-point percentage. She also received her award for being named the 2007-08 SLC Player of the Year and All-SLC First Team selection.

DeGrate was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player after leading the team in steals, assists and blocks. DeGrate also was voted to the All-Southland Conference Third Team after ranking second in the league in steals and 12th in blocks.

Sophomore Victoria Davis was voted Most Improved Player for the second year in a row. Davis started at point guard and ranked second on the team in assists and blocks while increasing her scoring average, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, rebounds per game and steals per game from a year ago.

Ashley Cole, the team’s second leading scorer, was named Newcomer of the Year before Moser closed out the awards presentation by winning the second annual Martha Powell Award. Named after one of the strongest supporters of Texas State women’s basketball, the award recognizes the player who best exemplifies determination, loyalty and perseverance.

Bill Culhane played host to the event, which also honored the Texas State men’s basketball team that finished its season 13-16 overall and 6-10 in SLC play.

  1. Congratulations to the entire women’s basketball program. It was a great season and I am happy to say that I met a lot of amazing people both on and off the court associated with the team. I can’t wait for next season!
