The Bobcats go 1-2 vs. SFA but are still in 1st place

NACOGDOCHES – In the battle between the two top softball teams in the Southland Conference, Texas State (30-15, 20-4) won 1 and lost 2 to Stephen F. Austin (30-18, 16-7) over the weekend. After the Ladyjacks swept the Bobcats in the doubleheader on Saturday, the ‘Cats came back on Sunday to win in extra innings to take a 3 ½ game lead in the conference.Pitcher Ragan Blake was the starter in game one. She only allowed 1 hit while striking out 4 in the first 3 innings of play. Texas State did not fair much better against the SFA pitcher only getting one base runner and collecting 0 hits through 3 innings. The Bobcats got it going in the 4th though when Alex Newton scored an unearned run on a Jetta Weinheimer single. Texas State missed out on a great opportunity to put up more runs when they had the bases loaded with 1 out but the next 2 batters popped and struck out to end the inning to strand all 3 runners. SFA also got on the board in the 4th with a 2 run home run to make the score 2-1. The Ladyjacks left 2 runners on base in the 5th and 1 more in the 6th while the Bobcats were only able to get one more hit to keep the score at 2-1 going into the last inning. Texas State went down in order in the 7th with a fly out and 2 strikeouts. Blake pitched the entire game giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6. She takes the loss and is now 14-9 on the season. The Bobcats batters were only able to manage 3 hits for the game.

Game 2 saw SFA jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning and they even stranded 3 runners. The Bobcats made it a 2-1 game in the top of the 2nd when Ashton Peters singled down the right field line to bring in Taylor Hall. Hall had reached on an error, stole 2nd and reached 3rd on a Ali McCormack fly ball. The Ladyjacks scored twice more in the 3rd to make the score 4-1. Texas State did not put up another run until the 5th inning. Alex Newton hit a bases loaded single to right center to bring in Kelsey Cammarata. The bases were still loaded with only one out but the next batter hit into a fielders choice to get the runner out at home and the next batter struck out to strand 3 runners. SFA padded their lead in the bottom of the 6th with 3 more runs to bring the score to 7-2. The Bobcats went down in order in the 7th with a ground out, pop out and a strike out to lose their 2nd straight to SFA. Katie Garnett took the loss and is now 12-5 on the season. Texas State was led offensively by Kristina Tello (2 for 4) and Peters (2 for 3, 1 RBI). The Bobcats were out hit 9-6 and committed 3 errors in the game.

The ‘Cats took an 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Jenna Emery scored on a 2 out single by Ashton Peters. Ragan Blake, who pitched a complete game in game 1 was the starter in game 3. She scattered 6 hits through the 1st 6 innings and the Bobcats were clinging to a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. The Ladyjacks 7th hit of the game though was a leadoff homer to center field to tie the game at 1. Going into extra innings, McKenzie Baack hit a 1 out double to left field and then scored when Leah Boatright followed her with a double to right center to take the lead. The next two batters struck out and fouled out to end the inning. Blake stayed in the pitch the 8th for the Bobcats and she got the 1st batter to ground out. The next 2 batters singled and walked to put the winning run on 1st. The next SFA batter hit a grounder that got the runner out at 2nd and now there were 2 outs with runners on the corners. Blake struck out the final batter to end the game and give the Bobcats the victory. Blake gets the win (15-8) after pitching 8 innings, giving up 1 run on 8 hits and striking out 6. Kristina Tello (2 for 4) and Peters (2 for 3, 1 RBI) led the team at the plate.

Ragan Blake finished the series pitching 14 innings giving up only 3 runs on 12 hits while striking out 12. Kristina Tello (4 for 11) and Ashton Peters (4 for 9, 2 RBI’s) were the offensive leaders.

Texas State returns to action Wednesday vs. the Texas A&M Aggies.
