Honors marks first of career for junior
SAN MARCOS – After helping Texas State to a 3-2 record by hitting safely in all five games and tallying two homers and seven RBIs, Bobcat junior catcher/outfielder Jetta Weinheimer was voted the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, league offices announced Monday.
Weinheimer batted .600 on the week and recorded at least two hits in four of the Bobcats’ five games, raising her season average from .286 to .341. Her two home runs came in an 8-6 loss to Texas Tech as part of a late-inning Texas State rally, and Weinheimer also drove in a run in four of Texas State’s five games on the week while scoring four times herself.
On the season she has four homers while ranking third on the Bobcats with 20 RBIs. The Hitter of the Week award marks the first of Weinheimer’s career and the second of the 2008 season for a Texas State player, as Leah Boatright won the award on March 4.
Central Arkansas’ Claire Collom was named Pitcher of the Week after hurling a five-hit shutout against defending SLC champion Sam Houston State. Collom struck out four and walked none in the contest, which snapped a 25 game losing streak for the Sugar Bears. The award was also the first SLC weekly softball award for a Central Arkansas player in program history.
