'Cats sweep Lady Demons

Streak extends to eight game conference wins

SAN MARCOS –  The Texas State (29-13,19-2) softball team ran their conference winning streak to 8 games with a sweep over the Lady Demons from Northwestern State (8-37,4-20)at Bobcat Field Saturday and Sunday.  In game one, the Bobcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead before settling for an 8-4 win.  The ‘Cats turned it on in the 2nd game of the doubleheader when they put up 11 runs in the 1st inning to cruise to a 11-3 victory.  Ragan Blake pitched a 2 hit shutout in game 3 to win 2-0.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after 1 inning in game one.  Kristina Tello scored the run when Taylor Hall singled to left field.  Texas State could have caused more damage because they left the bases loaded.  Northwestern State stranded 2 runners of their own in the top of the 2nd.  The ‘Cats came up in their half of the 2nd and put up 4 runs.

McKenzie Baack doubled to left center for the 4th consecutive base hit in the inning to bring in Tello and Jill Kloesel.  Leah Boatright walked to load the bases for Jetta Weinheimer, who singled to plate Baack and Alex Newton.  The next 2 batters fouled out and struck out to strand 2 more runners.  The Bobcats scored 3 more runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the 4th to make the score 8-0.  Two runs scored on a Ashton Peters double that brought in Hall and Bernheimer.  Ali McCormack hit a pinch hit double to bring in Allyce Rother for the last run.  The Lady Demons were finally able to get to Ragan Blake and they were able to get 4 earned runs in the top of the 5th before Katie Garnett came in as a reliever.  Garnett only gave up 1 hit to the Northwestern State batters in the 6th and 7th innings to put the game away.  Blake gets the win and is now 13-8 on the season.  She pitched 4.2 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6.  Garnett went 2.1 innings, giving up 0 runs on 3 hits.  The Bobcats were led offensively by Tello (3 for 5, 2 runs), Baack (1 for 2, 1 run, 2 RBI’s), Weinheimer (2 for 3, 1 run, 2 RBI’s), Hall (1 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Peters (2 for 4, 2 RBI’s).

After giving up 2 runs to Northwestern State in the 1st inning, the Bobcats scored 11 runs.   Leah Boatright (batting .311 with runners in scoring position)  started it off with a single to bring in Alex Newton.  Taylor Hall came up two batters later and hit a bases loaded double to bring in Boatright and McKenzie Baack.  Jenna Emery followed with a single to center to score Jetta Weinheimer.  Ashton Peters greeted the new relief pitcher with a single to bring in Hall.  Jill Kloesel hit another single to score Emery.  Kristina Tello came up with yet another single to bring in Peters.  Kloesel came home on a wild pitch before Boatright (2nd single of the inning)singled to bring in Tello.  Weinheimer then hit her 2nd single of the inning bringing in Newton (2nd score of the inning).  Hall then hit into a fielders choice to bring in Baack for the 11th run of the inning.  Katie Garnett got the Lady Demons out in order in the 2nd inning but got into a little trouble in the 3rd before pitching out of a jam that left 2 runners on base.   Northwestern State managed 1 hit in the 4th and 3 in the 5th and scored one more run to make the score 11-3.  The Bobcats only managed 3 hits after that 1st inning but that was enough for the victory.   Garnett picked up her 11th win of the season to go 11-4.  She pitched 5 innings, giving up 3 runs on 10 hits.  Tello (1 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Newton (1 for 3, 2 runs), Back for 1, 2 runs), Boatright (3 for 3, 1 run, 2 RBI’s), Weinheimer (2 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Hall (1 for 3, 1 run, 3 RBI’s), Emery (2 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Peters (1 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI) led the team from the plate.

Pitcher Ragan Blake was on the mound for game three and she limited the Lady Demons to one hit for the first two innings. After leaving 2 runners stranded in the 1st inning, the Bobcats got a run in the bottom of the 2nd when Taylor Hall stole home on a double steal play.  Northwestern State got another hit in the 3rd and stranded 2 runners but did not manage another base hit for the next 4 innings.  The Bobcats win the game 2-0.  Blake went the complete 7 innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 7 batters.  Blake is now 14-8 on the season.  The Bobcats scored their last run in the 5th inning when Hall singled to bring in Leah Boatright.   Hall (2 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Jill Kloesel (2 for 2) led the team from the plate.  Texas State had 6 stolen bases for the game.

The Bobcats will travel to Stephen F. Austin to play a 3 game series against the Ladyjacks beginning Saturday, Apr. 19, at 1 p.m.
