Texas State drops doubleheader to Texas Tech

LUBBOCK – The Texas State (26-13) softball team fell behind early in both games and were swept by Texas Tech (13-27) by the scores of 6-2 and 8-6 at Rocky Johnson Field Tuesday.  McKenzie Baack and Jetta Weinheimer both hit 2 homes runs each in the losses.

Texas Tech jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings of play.  They collected ten hits during those first four innings compared to only two for Texas State.  The Bobcats only collected five hits for the game but got three of them in the seventh inning.  McKenzie Baack hit a home run to left center to avoid the shutout.  Leah Boatright followed her with a double.  She then scored on a double by Jetta Weinheimer to make the score 6-2.  The Red Raiders then brought in a reliever who struck out 2 of the next 3 batters to end the game.   Baack (1 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Weinheimer (2 for 3, 1 RBI) were the leaders at the plate.  After collecting ten hits for the first four innings, starting pitcher Katie Garnett held Texas Tech hitless for the fourth and fifth innings.  Garnett took the loss and is now 11-4 on the season.

Texas Tech once again jumped out to an early lead in game two, putting up four runs in the first inning.   Texas State was held hitless in the first three innings but got a bit hit in the fourth to tighten the score at 4-2.   Shortstop Alex Newton opened the inning with a walk and she was brought in when Jetta Weinheimer homered to center field.  The Red Raiders did not like the score being that close and they answered with three runs on five hits in their half of the fourth inning.  McKenzie Baack provided the big hit in the Texas State fifth.  She his a home run to right field to bring in Newton and Kristina Tello.  At the end of five innings, the ‘Cats were within striking distance, 7-5.  Weinheimer got the Bobcats within one point with her second home run of the game.  Texas State had an opportunity to cause more damage when they had two runners on with only one out but a strike out and a line out ended the inning.  The Red Raiders picked up an insurance run in the sixth to make the score 8-6 with the Bobcats coming up for their last at bat.  Texas State only managed to get one runner on to end the game.  The Bobcats were led at the plate by Newton (0 for 3, 2 runs), Baack (1 for 3, 1 run, 3 RBI’s) and Weinheimer (2 for 4, 2 runs, 3 RBI’s).  Elizabeth Dennis took the loss to go 3-1 on the season.

McKenzie Baack (2 for 6, 2 runs, 4 RBI’s) and  Jetta Weinheimer (4 for 7, 2 runs, 4 RBI’s) each had a good series at the plate.

The Bobcats now return home to face Northwestern State in a three game series beginning Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
