SAN MARCOS – The Texas State Bobcats (17-10, 9-3) swept the Islanders from Texas A&M Corpus Christi (8-23, 5-7) over the weekend at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats now lead the overall series with the Islanders 16-5. In game one, Lance Loftin led the offense going 2 for 4 from the plate and pitcher Mike Hart pitched a complete game giving up only 2 runs to give the Bobcats a 4-2 victory. Steven Siers continued the impressive pitching by the Bobcats with his 2nd win of the season to lead Texas State to a 5-3 win in game two. In game three, Zach Tritz pitched another great game and Spenser Dennis went 3 for 4 and hit a grand slam to help the Bobcats sweep the Islanders with a 13-4 victory.

The Islanders started the scoring in game one getting a run off of 2 hits in the 1st inning to take a 1-0 lead. Pitcher Mike Hart shut down the Islanders in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings putting them down in order including striking out the side in the 4th. The Bobcats put a 1 spot up on the board in their half of the 4th to tie the game up. With two outs in the 4th Ben Theriot walked, advanced to 2nd on a single by Jerry Cervantes and scored when Lance Loftin reached on a throwing error. Texas A&M-CC worked hard and got a run to take the lead in the 5th inning 2-1. Hart got the Islanders out in order in the 6th and 7th innings recording two more strikeouts. The Bobcats threatened in the 6th but stranded two runners that had each walked to get on base. In the 7th, the Bobcat bats went to work. Adam Witek greeted the new Islander pitcher who had come in after the starter let the bases get loaded with no outs. Witek’s single brought in Elliot Babcock to tie the game at two. Laurn Randell was the next batter and he drew a walk to bring in Bret Atwood to take the lead. Theriot singled two batters later to bring in Thomas Field for the 3rd run in the inning. The next batter hit into a double play to end the inning and leave two runners on base. With a 4-2 lead, Hart held the Islanders to a single in the 8th and a walk which led to a double play and a double in the 9th to get the victory. Texas State had a great opportunity to score more runs in the 8th when they led off with two singles but the next 3 batters grounded out to end the inning and strand two more runners. Hart picks up the win pitching a complete game to go 3-2 on the season. He only gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and he also struck out 8 batters. Theriot (1 for 2, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Loftin (2 for 4, 1 RBI) led the team at the plate.

In game two, the ‘Cats starting pitcher Steven Siers pitched out of a jam in the 1st inning, striking out the last batter after the Islanders had loaded the bases on 2 outs. Texas State went down in order in the 1st but took a commanding lead in the 2nd, scoring 4 runs on 3 hits. The Bobcats loaded the bases with no outs. Lance Loftin brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly to plate Paul Goldschmidt. Elliot Babcock followed Loftin with a single to bring in Ben Theriot for the 2nd run. Thomas Field then hit a 2 out single to bring in Elliot Babcock and Spenser Dennis. Siers shut down the Islanders up until the 6th inning only giving up a walk in the 4th and a single in the 5th. Texas A&M-CC was able to get an unearned run in the 6th to bring the score to 4-1. They got the run on 2 hits, 1 error but they did leave 2 on base. Texas State had lots of runners but could not bring anyone home. They left 2 on in the 3rd and 5th innings. Siers allowed one hit in the 7th before leaving. He finished the night allowing 0 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out a season high eight batters. The Islanders liked the new relief pitcher scoring 2 runs on 3 hits and leaving 2 on base in the 8th to tighten the score at 4-3. Texas State picked up and insurance run in their half of the 8th to take a 2 run lead, 5-3 when Jason Martinson scored on a wild pitch. The ‘Cats reliever Josh Walter picked up his 3rd save of the season getting the Islanders to hit into a double play and then striking out the last batter to preserve the victory. Siers go the win and is now 2-1 on the season. The Bobcats were led offensively by Field (2 for 3, 2 RBI’s), Adam Witek (2 for 4), Laurn Randell (2 for 4) and Theriot (2 for 3, 1 run).

Each team scored a run in the 1st inning of game three. The Bobcats run came when Paul Goldschmidt singled to right field to plate Thomas Field. The Islanders got another run in the 2nd inning to bring the score to 2-1 after they led off with a double for the second inning in a row. Texas State took the lead 3-2 in the 4th when Lance Loftin homered to center field which also brought in Spenser Dennis. Pitcher Zach Tritz allowed only one Islander hit in the 5th to prevent them from scoring. Texas State took a commanding lead in their half of the 5th when they put up 4 more runs on 3 hits to take a 7-2 lead. Dennis was responsible for all 4 runs when he hit a 2 out grand slam scoring Ben Theriot, Adam Witek and Field. Tritz handed the ball to reliever Zach Boles after giving up a 2 run home run in the 8th to make the score 7-4 Texas State. The ‘Cats didn’t like the score being that close and they came out and put up 6 runs on 7 hits in their half of the 8th to extend the lead to 13-4. Elliot Babcock started it off with a home run to left field. Witek singled in the 2nd run of the inning scoring Bret Atwood. Witek then stole home to score the 3rd run. Goldschmidt followed with a home run to center field scoring Laurn Randell. Theriot scored the final run of the inning on a double by Dennis. Pitcher Eric Weaver sat the Islanders down in order in the 9th to finish off the win. Tritz got the win to go 6-0 for the season. He went 7 innings, giving up 4 runs off of 9 hits. The Bobcat leaders at the plate were Field (3 for 3, 2 runs), Witek (1 for 3, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Goldschmidt (4 for 5, 1 run, 3 RBI’s), Theriot (1 for 3, 2 runs), Spenser (3 for 4, 2 runs, 5 RBI’s), Loftin (2 for 4, 1 run, 2 RBI’s) and Babcock (2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI).

Sophomore Paul Goldschmidt hit his 10th home run of the season in the series. He was batting .465 in conference action, slugging .884 percent and had an on base percentage of .468 before the series. He went 4 for 9, 2 runs and 3 RBI’s against the Islanders. Lance Loftin (4 for 10, 1 run, 4 RBI’s), Spenser Dennis (3 for 7, 3 runs, 5 RBI’s), Ben Theriot (4 for 8, 4 runs, 1 RBI), Thomas Field (6 for 10, 3 runs, 2 RBI’s), Adam Witek (4 for 12, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s), Laurn Randell (3 for 10, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Elliot Babcock (4 for 11, 3 runs, 2 RBI’s) led the team from the plate. On the mound, the Bobcats got 3 great performances from Mike Hart (3-2 record, 2 runs on 5 hits and 8 strikeouts), Steven Siers (2-1 record, 0 runs on 6 hits while striking out a season high 8 batters) and Zach Tritz (6-0 record, 7 innings, 4 runs off of 9 hits). Reliever Josh Walter also picked up his 3rd save of the season.

The Bobcats will return to the field Tuesday night at the Dell Diamond against the Texas Longhorns.
