Bobcat Football Team Showing Progress In First Two Weeks Of Spring Practice
San Marcos, Texas – As the Texas State football team prepares for their scrimmage this Friday, head coach Brad Wright has been pleased with the Bobcats offensive execution and improvement on defense in their second week.
Texas State will hold its second scrimmage of the spring at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4 on the Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium before concluding its final week of Spring Practice April 7-12.
“Offensively, this is our second season together and they have shown their familiarity with our system,” Wright said. “We have a solid group of running backs, and Cameron Luke is back at wide receiver after his record-setting season last year. Our two quarterbacks have done a good job moving the ball, and our offensive line is starting to become a solid unit with two new guards after we had two seniors starting there last season.”
Texas State returns Karrington Bush, Alvin Canady and Stan Zwinggi at running back. Bush was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year after rushing for over 1,000 yards. Zwinggi missed three games with an injury, but still ran for 497 yards and nine touchdowns, while Canady rushed for 377 yards and two scores.
Bradley George completed 190 of his 334 passes for 2,099 yards and 16 touchdowns, while Clint Toon threw four TD passes.
Luke set school records with 60 receptions for 1,035 yards and 12 touchdowns en route to earning All-Southland Conference First-Team honors. Canady caught 37 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns out of the backfield.
On the offensive line, the Bobcats return Alex Luna and Calvin Gore at tackle and Jeff Bowen at center.
Wright also has been pleased with his defensive unit during the past two practices.
“We are putting in a new system this spring and they are starting to get a grasp of what we are doing,” Wright said. “We have been able to move people around a little more after having to play a lot of reps in basic formations early this spring. That has evened the score a little bit.”
Fred Bleil has joined Texas State’s coaching staff as a co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.
“Coach Bleil has a lot of experience, and brought in fresh ideas and a new coaching style,” Wright said. “In our first scrimmage last week, the defense was like sitting ducks out there because they ran basic formations. In the past couple of days, they have started (getting a better grasp of what we are doing).”
The defensive line has Ray Parker returning at tackle after he started nine games in 2007. Freddy Paige also has moved to defensive end after he started the final seven games at weak-side linebacker.
Marcus Clark also returns at linebacker after leading the team in tackles as a true freshman in 2007. Another returning linebacker is Travis Houston, who was the team’s second-leading tackler last season as a sophomore.
“I am starting to feel a lot better about our linebackers, and we have some guys at cornerback who look like they have a chance to be really good,” Wright added. “We just need to develop some depth on the defensive line and we may need to use some freshman for depth at all positions.”
After Friday’s scrimmage, the Bobcats will return to the practice field for their three practices on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday before playing their annual Maroon-Gold Game on Saturday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.Email | Print
