SAN MARCOS – The Texas State (14-10) baseball team had an early lead but could not hold on and they fell to the Texas Christian Uiversity Horned Frogs (16-12) by the score of 12-8 at Bobcat Field Wednesday night. This was the 2nd meeting between these two teams for the season. TCU took a 4-3 11th-inning victory over Texas State when they met in early March. In the first game, the Bobcats also had an early lead on the scoreboard, but the Frogs fought back and won the game. That game went 11 innings and lasted 4 hours and 14 minutes. With the victory, TCU now leads the all-time series 19-11.
The Bobcats held TCU scoreless in the 1st inning even though they struggled a little. The ‘Cats starting pitcher Kane Holbrooks (1-3) got a TCU batter to ground out with runners at 1st and 3rd with two outs to end the inning. Texas State put up 2 big points in their half of the 1st off of a Paul Goldschmidt home run to center field. Goldschmidt’s 9th homer of the season also scored Laurn Randell who had singled. Holbrooks had another tough inning in the 2nd, giving up leadoff singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. He was able to work out of it, getting the next 3 batters out in order. The Bobcats added another run in the 2nd when Thomas Field lined a double down the left field line to score Elliott Babcock to make the score 3-0. The Frogs tied it up at 3 in their half of the 3rd inning. All 3 runs came when the Frogs right fielder hit a 3 run homer to left field. That would be the end of the day for Holbrooks. He went 3 innings and gave up 3 runs on 8 hits and struck out 2.
Texas State responded with 2 runs of their own to reclaim the lead 5-3 in the 3rd inning. Randell scored when Goldschmidt tripled for the 1st run. Theriot followed Goldschmidt with a single to score him for run #2 of the inning. Brian Borski was the new pitcher in the 4th for the Bobcats and he was greeted by a double. After walking the next batter, he got the 3rd batter of the inning to hit into a double play that scored the leadoff batter to make the score 5-4. Randell hit a double down the left field line to bring in Bret Atwood for another Bobcat run in their half of the 4th to bring the score to 6-4. TCU took the lead back for good in the 5th when they put up 3 runs on 3 hits to go up 7-6. Texas State started out with a single in their at bat in the 5th but the next two batters hit into a double play and struck out to end the inning. The Horned Frogs added another run in the 6th to bring the score to 8-6. The ‘Cats once again led of the inning with a hit in the 6th but the next three batters went down in order.
TCU continued their scoring blitz with 4 more runs in the 7th. Another home run by the right fielder brought in 2 runs and then 2 batters later, another 2 run home run made the score 12-6. Texas State closed the gap a little in the 7th on a Jerry Cervantes double that scored Theriot. The score after 7 innings was 12-7. The 7th Bobcat pitcher of the night was Zach Boles and he was able to keep the Horned Frogs from scoring for the 6th consecutive inning when he sat them down in order striking out 2. The Bobcats picked up another run to make the score 12-8 in the 8th when Adam Witek singled to bring in Aaron Fuller. The ‘Cats 8th pitcher of the night was Lance Loftin who was able to shut out the Frogs in the 9th. Texas State went down in order in their half of the 9th with all 3 batters striking out.
The Bobcats were led at the plate by Randell (3 for 5, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Goldschmidt (2 for 5, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and Theriot (3 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI).
Texas State will play Texas A&M Corpus Christi this weekend beginning Friday night at Bobcat Field.
