HOUSTON – The men’s and women’s track teams both finished in the middle of the pack at the Victor Lopez Rice Bayou Classic held at the Rice Track and Field Stadium. The men finished in 7th place out of 19 teams while the women finished 8th out of 17 teams where each team competed in 20 events. This meet was the first event of the season that was a team scored meet. The men’s team won two events and finished with 42 points. Stephen F. Austin won with 74 points. Other notable men’s teams were Rice (70 pts), UTSA (69), Texas A&M Corpus Christi (47), Texas Tech (26) and Sam Houston State (5). The women’s team scored 30 points in the meet. Rice won their own event with 155.5 points. Other notable women’s teams were Texas (108 pts), Stephen F. Austin (47), Texas A&M Corpus Christi (33), Texas Tech (19) and Sam Houston State (16).
Leading the Bobcat women, Iris Darrington, the freshman from Converse Judson placed 2nd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.78 seconds to bring in 8 points. Jiovanna Martinez, another freshman from Pharr Texas placed in two field event to bring in a total of 8 more points. Martinez placed 4th in the discus throw with a toss of 43.00 meters. She also placed 6th in the hammer throw with a throw of 45.75 meters. Crystyne Hatfield finished 4th in the 400 meter hurdles to bring in 5 points with a time of 1:04.07. Cara Forrest, the sophomore from Justin Northwest High School was slightly behind Hatfield in the 400 meter hurdle event and fished 6th with a time of 1:05.43 to score 3 more points. Alaysha Ford finished 5th in the triple jump to score 4 points with a leap of 11.31 meters. Amanda McKinney, the freshman from North Carolina got another point for the team when she finished 8th in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:00.40. Kayla Smith, the sophomore from Kansas fished out the scoring with an 8th place finish in the shot put to score another point with a throw of 12.25 meters.
The men’s team recorded two wins at the meet. Kemuel Morales, the junior from Pace High School in Brownsville Texas won the shot put with a throw of 17.77 meters. Morales won All Southland Conference honors in the shot put during the indoor season. Jonathan Ochoa was the other event winner. He won the javelin throw with a toss of 59.70 meters. Marales and Ochoa each recorded 10 points for their victories. Ikenna Obonna added 6 points with a 3rd place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 15.02 meters. The Bobcat 4X400 meter relay team posted a season best time of 3:18.06 to place 4th and bring in 5 more points. The team consisted of Kammer Gerry, Michael Webley, Justin Longoria and Jeffery Dean. Andy Ysebaert, the sophomore from Canada recorded 4 total points for the meet. He scored 3 points with a 6th place finish in the discuss with a toss of 45.66 meters. He also placed 8th in the shot put with a throw of 15.30 meters. The Bobcats last 7 points were recorded in the hammer throw. Dan Schmidt finished 5th to score 4 points with a throw of 50.84 meters. David Hernandez followed Schmidt with a throw of 50.75 meters to place 6th and score 3 points.
The next meet for both teams will be at the Texas Relays in Austin on April 2nd-5th.Email | Print
