Bobcat softball women move to 11-1 in conference

CONWAY, Ark. – The Bobcats earned another sweep over a conference foe when Texas State (17-10,11-1 SLC) won all three games against Central Arkansas 0 (2-21,0-9 SLC) over the weekend. The ‘Cats took the series opener 8-6 thanks to Ali McCormack’s 4th home run of the season. Ryan Kos also hit a pair of doubles and had 3 RBI’s in the win. Sunday was a double header and Texas State won by a combined score of 20-0. McCormack hit her second grand slam of the season to lead the Bobcats to an 8-0 victory in game one. Kos hit a home run and a double to lead the team to a 10-0 win in just 5 innings in game two. Ragan Blake and Katie Garnett were dominant on the mound with back to back shutouts.

Game one was scoreless until the 4th inning when the Bobcats exploded for 7 runs. Ali McCormack led it off with a home run to right center. Ashton Peters singled with runners on 2nd and 3rd to score Leah Boatright for run #2. Taylor Hall followed that up with another single to score McKenzie Baack. Ryan Kos brought in 3 more runs when she hit a base loaded double to plate Kristina Tello, Hall and Peters. Kos then scored the final run of the inning on a hit by Alex Newton. The inning ended with 7 runs scored on 7 hits, 2 errors by the Sugar Bears and 3 runners left on base. Central Arkansas answered with 2 runs in their half of the 4th and Texas State got an insurance run in the 6th when McCormack singled to bring in Kos. UCA made it close in their half of the 6th when they put up 2 runs to bring the score to 8-6 with Texas State leading going into the final frame. Texas State was held scoreless in their half of the 7th while Central Arkansas opened up with a double in their half. Katie Garnett came back into the game after pitching the first 4 innings to shut them down and put the Sugar Bears down in order. Garnett got the win to go 7-3 for the year. She pitched 5 innings and only gave up 2 runs. Kos (2 for 4, 2 runs, 3 RBI’s), McCormack (2 for 3, 1 run, 2 RBI’s), Boatright (2 for 4, 1 run), Baack (2 for 3, 1 run), Peters (2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Hall (2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI) led the Bobcats at the plate.

Game two was the 1st game of a doubleheader. Texas State left 3 on base without getting a hit in the 2nd inning but came back in the 3rd to pick up 4 runs. All 4 runs were from one swing of the bat when Ali McCormack homered to center field with the bases loaded scoring Alex Newton, Ryan Kos and Kristina Tello. The Bobcats got another run in the 4th when Tello doubled to bring in Kelsey Cammarata. The ‘Cats led 5-0 going into the final inning and they put up another 3 runs for good measure. All 3 runs were produced with 2 outs. Jenna Emeryst run of the inning. McKenzie Baack brought her in with a 2 run home run to left field to make the score 8-0. Ragan Blake struck out two UCA batters in the 7th to complete the shutout. Blake finished with a complete game shutout only giving up 4 runs and striking out 10 batters. She is now 7-7 on the season. The Bobcats shutout the Sugar Bears again in game 3. They scored runs in all 5 innings to win 10-0. The ‘Cats left 3 on base in the 1st inning but did get a run in when Ali McCormack singled to right center to bring in Kristina Tello. In the 2nd inning Ryan Kos hit a double to score Taylor Hall to make the score 2-0. Texas State put up 2 more runs on 3 hits in the 3rd. Jetta Weinheimer singled to bring in Leah Boatright for the 1st run. Weinheimer then scored on a Kelsey Cammarata single. The Bobcats kept applying the pressure and put up 3 more in the 4thth, scoring 3 more runs on 2 hits and leaving 3 on base. Allyce Rother scored the 1st run of the inning when Kos reached on a fielding error. Kos then scored on an Alex Newton single. Baack finished the scoring when she drew a bases loaded walk to score Newton. Katie Garnett pitched a 1-2-3 inning to end the game. Garnett got the win and is now 8-3 on the season. She pitched a 5 inning complete game 2 hit shutout. Kos (2 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s), McCormack (2 for 2, 1 RBI), Boatright (2 for 2, 2 runs) and McKenzie (1 for 3, 3 RBI’s) led the team at the plate. inning. Kos started it off with a home run. For the series, Katie Garnett and Ragan Blake pitched outstanding games. Garnett pitched 10 innings only giving up 2 runs while earning 2 wins. Blake pitched a complete game shutout only giving up 4 runs and striking out 10 batters in game two. Ali McCormack had a great series at the plate going 6 for 8, scoring 2 runs and driving in 7 runs.

The Bobcats next game will be in Austin on Wednesday against the Texas Longhorns at 6:30 p.m.
