The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District board hired a new assistant superintendent for finance and support services at a special board meeting on Thursday, replacing Rene Barajas who district officials said had taken a similar job with the Garland school district.
Michael D. Abild, a certified public accountant, was most recently a technical finance specialist for the Houston-area Region 4 Education Service Center. He was the Brazosport school district’s business director from 1982 to this year. He served as the district’s interim superintendent in 2000. In Brazosport, Abild was active in the chamber of commerce.
“My wife and I have visited the San Marcos area regularly for the past 30 years,” Abild said. “And we’ve admired and enjoyed the community. We have a little cabin in Wimberley, but it has always been our dream to relocate to San Marcos. I look forward to all the opportunities this new position affords.”
At his job here, Abild is responsible for developing and administering the district’s $125 million budget including overseeing investments, payroll, audits, purchasing and risk management.
Albid is Superintendent Patty Shafer’s latest administrative hire as she assembles a team after taking the district’s helm last year. Dr. Shafer said in a written statement, “I am very comfortable that Mike Abild will be a match for our leadership team, bringing extensive knowledge in school finance and excellent interpersonal skills.”
In September, former Bonham and De Zavala elementary school principal Yolanda Almendarez was named assistant superintendent for teaching and learning. In addition, a number of principal jobs have changed hands including at the high school where Michelle Darling, also from the Region 4 Education Service Center, took over for the beginning of the academic year in August.
