Bobcats drop two of three on the diamond to Lobos

SAN MARCOS – The Texas State (4-3) baseball team finished out their series against the New Mexico Lobos (7-1) with a 1-2 record. The series opened up with another 1 point showing as the Lobos won 11-1. This loss coming after Texas State only managed 1 point in their 8-1 loss to Houston a few days earlier. On Saturday, the Bobcats found their offense and rallied but came up short 11-10. The next day, the Bobcats avoided the sweep and beat the lobos 8-7.

In game one, the Bobcats bell behind 11-0 before scoring in the 7th to avoid the shutout. Jerry Cervantes hit a home run to left center. The ‘Cats got 3 other hits in the inning but did not get any more runs. Texas State finished with 6 hits for the game and committed 4 errors while giving up 16 hits to the Lobos. Cervantes was the lone spark at the plate finishing the game going 2 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Texas State found their offense early in game 2 Saturday, scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning. Thomas Field scored on a wild pitch after he started the inning with a walk. Laurn Randell scored the 2nd run on an error by the Lobo SS. Jonathan Farrow then followed with a 2 run homer to right center scoring Ben Theriot. New Mexico got 1 run in the 3rd and then 3 in the 5th to tie the game at 4. The Lobos followed up with 4 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th to take a 10-4 lead 7 ½ innings into the game. The ‘Cats had a big 7th inning and got 5 runs on only 1 hit. Four consecutive walks scored Spenser Dennis. The next 2 batters struck out and lined out with the bases loaded. This brought Farrow up to the plate and he delivered the innings only hit. He deposited the ball over the left center field fence for a grand slam scoring Randell, Adam Witek and Field. Texas State only trailed 10-9 after the 7th. New Mexico got a run in the 8th while Texas State failed to score bringing the score to 11-9. Witek started off the 9th inning off with a single. Randell forced Witek out at 2nd for the 1st out. The next batter popped up for the 2nd out in the inning. Theriot followed up with a double to center scoring Randell to bring the Bobcats to within 1 point and now Farrow was stepping up to the plate. He had already hit 2 HR’s in the game and had a career high 6 RBI’s. During his bat though, Jason Martison who had came in as a pinch runner was caught stealing on a passed ball to end the game. The Lobos were going to intentionally walk Farrow when the ball got past the catcher. He recovered quickly and threw out the runner at 3rd. Texas State scored 10 runs on 8 hits while New Mexico got 11 runs on 19 hits stranding 11 runners. Field (1 for 3, 2 runs), Witek (2 for 4, 1 run), Randell (0 for 2, 3 runs), Theriot (1 for 5, 1 run, 2 RBI’s) and Farrow (2 for 4, 2 runs, 6 RBI’s) led the team at the plate.

Texas State tied the game at 1-1 in the 1st inning of game 3 when Aaron Fuller scored on a Lobo error. New Mexico had a 5-1 lead going into the Bobcat 6th inning. Paul Goldschmidt opened the inning with a home run to bring the score to 5-2. Three batters later Ben Theriot homered to right to bring in Laurn Randel to make the score 5-4. Each team scored 2 in their half of the 7th to bring the score to 7-6. Goldschmidt brought home Jason Martison with a fly out for the Bobcats first run. Randel singled down the right field line to bring in Thomas Field for the second run. The Bobcats held New Mexico scoreless for the next 2 innings and entered the bottom of the 9th only down by one. Randel got on base with a fielders choice for the 2nd out of the inning. He stole 2nd and then advanced to 3rd on a passed ball. Theriot then delivered a 2 out single to score Randel and tie the game at 7 apiece. The next Bobcat batter flied out to put the game into extra innings. New Mexico got 2 hits but failed to score in the 10th. Texas State had a strike out and 2 ground outs for their half of the 10th inning. Kyle Gembler came in an pitched the 11th and got 3 fly outs to end the inning. With one out in the bottom of the 11th, Goldschmidt hit his 2nd home run of the game over the left field wall and the Bobcats won 8-7 in extra innings. Gembler (1-0) got the win for the Bobcats. Goldschmidt (3 for 5, 2 runs, 3 RBI’s), Randell (3 for 5, 2 runs, 1 RBI) and Theriot (2 for 5, 1 run, 3 RBI’s) led the team at the plate.

Texas State will travel to Fort Worth on March 5 for meeting with TCU. The ‘Cats will then return home for four games against Northern Illinois.
