Texas State continues to dominate Southland Conference softball

SAN MARCOS – Texas State (12-9,6-0) got two shutout performances from pitcher Ragan Blake to help sweep the Islanders from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (7-11, 2-4) in softball Saturday and Sunday at Bobcat field. This was the 2nd consecutive sweep of an Southland Conference opponent.

In game 1, Blake threw a two-hit shutout to beat the Islanders 4-0. Texas State started it off in the 1st by getting an early 3-0 lead. Ali McCormack singled up the middle to bring in Kristina Tello for the first run. Ashton Peters lined a 2 out single to right to score McCormack and Alex Newton. The ‘Cats got another walk in the inning to load the bases again but could not get any more runs and left 3 on base. Peter’s single came after a catchers interference call that would have ended the inning. The Bobcats did not score again until the 5th inning when Kelsey Cammarata scored on a Leah Boatright double. Boatright’s hit came after McCormack had doubled and Cammarata came in to pinch run for her. The game ended with the Bobcats getting 4 runs on 7 hits. Blake dominated throughout and had the Islanders go 0 runs on 0 hits in 5 of their 7 innings. Blake stuck out 3 while recording her 4th win of the season. McCormack (2 for 2, 1 Run, 1 RBI) and Peters (1 for 3, 2 RBI’s) were the stars from plate.

Game 2 featured Katie Garnett on the mound for the Bobcats. Offensively, Texas State got thing going in the 2nd inning after stranding 3 runners in the 1st. Ashton Peters provided the fireworks with a 3 run homer to left field scoring Leah Boatright and Ali McCormack. Garnett cruised through 5 innings only giving up 3 hits to the Islanders. In the Texas State half of the 5th, McCormack homered to left field to make the score 4-0. The Bobcats got another run in the 6th when Jenna Emery scored on an Islander throwing error on an Taylor Hall single. Garnett gave up 2 consecutive singles to start the Islander 7th and Elizabeth Dennis came in to close out the game. The Islanders scored 2 to make the final 5-2 with Texas State taking their 2nd game over the visitors. Garnett gets the win and is now 5-3 on the season. The offensive stars were McCormack (1 for 2, 2 runs, 1 RBI), McKenzie Baack (2 for 2), Peters (1 for 3, 1 run, 3 RBI’s) and Hall (3 for 3).

Ragan Blake was on the mound for game 3 with the Bobcats looking for the sweep. Blake only gave up 1 hit through 2 innings. The ‘Cats then put up 2 runs on 3 hits in their half of the 2nd when McKenzie Baack and Leah Boatright scored on a Taylor Hall double. The Islanders went down in order in the 3rd and the Bobcats put another on the board to make the score 3-0. Alex Newton hit a 2 out single and advanced to 3rd on a single by Ali McCormack and then she stole home. Blake put together 2 more 0 runs on 0 hits innings before Texas State scored in the 5th. McCormack hit her 2nd home run of the series, a 2 run blast that also scored Ryan Kos. The Islanders got two of their 4 hits in the 6th but Blake struck out a batter with runners on 1st and 2nd to end the inning. The Bobcats put up 2 more points in their half of the 6th to make the score 7-0. Alex Newton’s 2 out double scored Kristina Tello and Jill Kloesel. Blake held the Islanders scoreless in the 7th and the Bobcats earn the sweep with a 7-0 victory. This was Blake’s 2nd consecutive shutout over the Islanders. She struck out nine while scattering 4 hits to get her 5th win of the season. Tello (2 for 4, 1 run), Newton (2 for 4, 1 run, 2 RBI’s), McCormack (2 for 4, 1 run, 2 RBI’s), Boatright (2 for 2, 1 run) and Hall (1 for 3, 2 RBI’s) were the offensive stars.

McCormack finished the series by going 5 for 8, scoring 4 runs and collecting 4 RBI’s. Ashton Peters also was hot from the plate going 2 for 7, scoring once and getting 5 RBI’s. Blake pitched two great games, pitching 2 complete games, 14.0 innings, giving up only 6 hits, striking out 9 and giving up 0 runs.
