Bobcats eliminated from tourney with loss to Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE – The Texas State (12-16, 5-10) men’s basketball team could not hold on to lead they held at halftime and fell to the Bearkats from Sam Houston State (21-6, 9-5), 80-74 Saturday night at Johnson Coliseum. Texas State had won their game earlier in the year 96-93 in overtime at home. The Bobcats still lead the all time series 90-76. With the loss, Texas State will not be going to the Southland Conference Postseason Tournament.

The ‘Cats jumped out to an early 9-3 lead after Brandon Bush hit a layup at the 17:24 mark. The Bearkats later evened the score at 14 with 14:53 remaining. The Bobcats slowly increased their lead after that and had a 37-27 lead with just 6:17 left until halftime. Texas State maintained the lead and still led by 6 at half even though Sam Houston got a 3-pointer right before the buzzer. Texas State shot an amazing 60.7% for the half to take a 45-39 lead. The dominated inside by outscoring the Bearkats 22-6. Bush led the team in scoring and rebounding with 8 points and 4 rebounds. Sam Houston State only made 40% of their shots for the half but made 6 of 11 3-pointers.

The Bobcats did not hold the lead for long as the Bearkats outscored them 18-3 to start the 2nd half to take a 57-48 lead with 11:43 left in the game. Texas State did not fold though and when Brent Holder hit a 3-pointer at the 7:38 mark, the score was tied at 60. Three minutes later the score was again tied at 65. Sam Houston took over from there and got the lead up to 10 (78-68) with 17 seconds left. Two late 3-pointers by Corey Jefferson and Dylan Moseley made the final score 80-74. The Bobcats were only able to make one shot from the floor in the first 10 minutes on the 2nd half and finished with only 29 points. Texas State, who shot over 60 % in the 1st half only made 9 of 26 (34.6%) in the 2nd half. The Bobcats had been shooting well from the free throw line lately but only made 7 of 14 for the game. Mosely finished with 9 points in the 2nd half. Bush led the Bobcats in scoring and rebounding for the game with 14 points and 8 rebounds.

The Bobcats close out the regular season at Strahan Coliseum on Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m. against Texas-Arlington. The school will honor its three senior players in a Senior Appreciation Ceremony for Matt Fullenwider, Brent Holder and Brandon Thomas.
