EDINBURG – It was a great start to the season this past weekend as the Texas State men’s baseball team won all 3 games including 2 games against conference foes at the Al Ogletree Classic Tournament hosted by Texas-Pan American.
In game one, the Bobcats scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat Stephen F. Austin 8-7 in the 2008 season opener. After 3 innings, the `Cats led 2-1 on a single by Jon Farrow scoring Ben Theriot in the 2nd and a run by Thom Field who began the inning with a double and then scored on a single by Laurn Randell and a throwing error. Farrow brought in Lance Loftin with a fly out in the 4th inning to bring the score to 3-1. The Bobcats turned in another good inning in the 6th when they put up 2 more runs. Loftin doubled to bring in Paul Goldschmidt and then Farrow singled to bring in Loftin for the 5-1 lead. SFA rallied in the 8th & 9th innings and scored 3 runs in each inning to take the lead 7-5. Theriot came through with the big hit in the bottom of the 9th to rally the `Cats. He singled to bring in Randall and Adam Witek to tie the score at 7. Josh Walter shutdown the Lumberjacks in their half of the 10th, 3 up and 3 down. The Bobcats loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the 10th and Randall hit a single scoring Elli Babock to win the game 8-7. The `Cats finished with 12 hits. Randall led the team going 3 for 6 with 2 RBI’s. Theriot (2 RBI’s), Loftin (2 Runs), Babock (2 for 5), Farrow (2 for 5 with 3 RBI’s) also had great games at the plate. Mike Hart pitched 6.0 solid innings, allowing one run on six hits. He struck out six and walked four. Walter was credited with the first win of the season.

—————Game #2 had the Bobcats taking on the Fighting Illini from Illinois
. This game was not the offensive explosion as their first game was but it turned into another nail biter. Texas State did not score until the 4th inning when they took a 1-0 lead when Ben Theriot double down the right field line to score Laurn Randell. The Illini finally got on the board in the 8th inning to tie the game up at 1 apiece. In the bottom of the 9th it was time for some more Bobcat heroics. Spenser Dennis
reached on an error with 2 outs. He advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and then scored when Adam Witek singled to right center. Texas State wins another close one 2-1. Steven Siers
pitched a great game going 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, striking out three and giving up 0 runs. Josh Walker got his 2nd win of the season by striking out two and only facing 3 batters again to end the game. Witek went 2 for 5 with an RBI and Paul Goldschmidt went 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the offense.Score by Innings R H E

————-The final game of the tournament was against conference foe Sam Houston State
. The Bobcats started off quickly as Paul Goldschmidt hit a two run homer to bring in Laurn Randell to make the score 2-0 after 1 inning. After giving up 2 runs in the 3rd to tie the score at 2, the Bobcats answered with a pair of runs of their own in the 4th. Jerry Cervantes
singled to bring in Lance Loftin and Adam Witek singled to score Jason Martinson
to take the lead 4-3. The `Cats went up 5-3 in the 7th when Randell singled to score Spenser Dennis. With a 5-3 lead and Josh Walter taking the mound, the Bobcats 3rd victory of the tournament appeared to be in the bag. Sam Houston had other ideas as their 1st batter got the 1st hit in 3 games against Walter with a double down the right field line. Walter settled down and struck out the next two batters but he walked the next to put runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. The next `Kat batter singled to bring in a run making the score 5-4 and runners were now on the corners. Walter ended the comeback with his 3rd strikeout of the inning to give the Bobcats their 3rd victory of the tournament. Zach Tritz
got the win throwing 6.0 innings with two strike outs. The Bobcats recorded 11 hits led by Thomas field who went 1 for 4 with a triple. Randell went 3 for 4 with a RBI while Loftin (2 for 4 and 1 run) and Cervantes (2 for 4and an RBI) were the other team leaders at the plateThe Bobcats will take the field again Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Houston before opening at Bobcat Field in a series with New Mexico. The home opener begins Friday at 6 p.m.
