While the world of Texas State athletics currently revolves around the decision by the football program to make the move up to Football Bowl Subdivison (FBS), citizens of San Marcos have a winning team that is getting very little attention. The Texas State women’s basketball team is currently leading the Southland Conference with a 10-1 conference record and 16-8 overall.
Since moving to San Marcos, I have never seen anything close to a sold-out Strahan Coliseum, yet I catch amazing basketball each time they tip off. I understood during the semester break that it was only me and a hundred or so of my fellow fans, but now that the semester is in full swing… where are the fans?
In 2003, the Bobcat women advanced to the NCAA tournament after winning the SLC tournament despite being ranked 4th at the end of regular season. This years squad needs a win tonight to guarantee the regular season crown and needs fans to rock Strahan to send them out in style.
There is ONE LAST opportunity to catch your Bobcat women before they head off to the Merrill Center in Katy to hopefully bring home a Southland Conference Championship. Tonight, 7PM at Strahan Coliseum, the ‘Cats will not only play their final home game of the season, but it will be Senior Night. Seniors Joyce Ekworomadu, Brooke DeGrate and Marie Moser will be honored before the game against Texas A&M Corpus Christi for their contributions to the team.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a narrow 60-57 win over Texas-Pan American on Monday. Mercedes Cooper led the Islanders with 14 points in the game and ranks second on the team in scoring on the season with a 9.9 average. Elisa Beagle scored just eight points in 14 minutes against the Lady Broncs, but Beagle leads Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in scoring and rebounding on the year with 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
