SAN MARCOS – The final home game of the season for the Texas State women’s basketball squad pitted them against the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Senior Night festivities began with a pre-game tribute to the players and staff who would be participating in the final home game of their Texas State careers. Players Joyce Ekworamadu, Brooke DeGrate, and Marie Moser celebrated the event with parents, friends and fans and ended their home careers on a high note, winning 78-62.

The Bobcats started off uncharacteristically tight and missed several open opportunities as the Islanders managed to hold the lead until the 14:34 mark of the first half. Brooke DeGrate created a spark with a steal and a pass to Ashley Cole that capped a fast break, putting Texas State ahead. The Bobcats settled in to the rhythm that has served them well en route to their first place ranking in the Southland Conference. The victory sealed the regular season championship for the Texas State women and leaves them as the team to beat in the upcoming conference tournament.

Just nine minutes into the game, the Bobcats had more than doubled up the Islanders, leading 17-8. The Texas A&M Corpus Christi women responded with a surge of their own, closing the score to two at 18-16 just over two minutes later. Texas State again edged in front, only to see the lead disappear completely at the 7:01 mark when Deziree Green hit a three to tie it up 25-25. The lead see-sawed between the teams for the next three minutes as both suffered from sloppy execution on offense and careless fouls on defense. There was only a 1 point difference with the Bobcats on top at the 3:26 mark. With just two minutes remaining the half, Joyce Ekworamadu scored back to back buckets, one on a tough putback after a rebound and then one on the break to stretch the ‘Cats lead to five, 37-32. The Islanders caught a little fire of their own to regain the lead with 12 seconds remaining off Sarah Davidson‘s left-handed hook shoot. As time ran out on the first half, Brittany Wilson hit a buzzer-beater to send the Bobcats to the break with a 39-38 lead.

For the first half, Joyce Ekworomadu led the ‘Cats in scoring with 10 points despite going 0-4 from three-point land, and Aimee Hilburn‘s 4 rebounds led all players. Scoring for the Islanders was provided by Sarah Davidson’s 12 and Deziree Green with 8. The big difference in the first half was the dismal three-point shooting by Texas State who went 1 of 7 (14.3%) compared to the Islander’s 2-4 (50%.)

The second half saw the Bobcats again open sluggish as Texas A&M Corpus Christi took the lead 40-39 on an Eliza Beagle shot just 40 seconds into the half. Once again, Texas State responded, this time with a 6-0 run, giving the Bobcats a five point lead that lasted eight minutes before Victoria Davis extended it seven off a fast break layup, 53-46. The pace slowed for the next few minutes as neither team managed many points and both seemed to be charging up for a push in the final few minutes. With just 9:04 remaining in the game, Corpus scratched to within two points 56-54 after the Bobcats went a stretch of over three minutes scoring only three points. Again Texas State responded. The ‘Cats went on a 16-0 run to stretch the lead to a game-best 18 points, 72-54 at the 4:24 mark. The Islanders’ five minute scoring drought was ended when Eliza Beagle hit a free throw with just over 4 minutes remaining. The final few minutes saw the Islanders come no closer than 16 and that is how it ended at Strahan Coliseum.

Joyce Ekworamadu led all scorers with 27 points and Ashley Cole, who always matches up well with the Islanders added 12 of her own. Aimee Hilburn led all rebounders with 9, including 3 on the offensive side. Brooke DeGrate ended the game with a career-high 9 steals.

Next up for the Bobcat women is a road game against Texas-San Antonio February 23rd at 2:00 PM.
