School counselor’s ‘Cinderella’s Closet’ provides prom attire to students who can’t afford it

From the San Marcos school district

Three years ago, San Marcos High School counselor Jeri Hudson saw a need and started to work.

She collects used formal clothes for young teenagers who might not otherwise be able to afford evening gowns and tuxedoes for proms and other formal occasions. She calls her collection Cinderella’s Closet.

“I have been collecting gowns for girls that need them, and we’re expanding to include male formal wear, too,” Hudson said.

According to Hudson, the clothes are loaned out at no cost and returned to her dry-cleaned. She welcomes gently used gowns, tuxes, dress shirts, tie, and jewelry. She is also seeking donated services of hair dressers and makeup artists and stores that would be interested in contributing accessories such as jewelry.

“If anyone has old prom clothes in your closet that you are willing to part with, bring them to me,” Hudson says.

Donations will be accepted at the high school’s counseling office or by contacting Hudson by phone at (512) 393-6815 or by email at
