San Marcos – The Texas State softball team played their first home game of the season Wednesday night at Bobcat Field against the #25 ranked University of Texas Longhorns. The standing room only crowd was treated to an exciting match from start to finish, but went home disappointed after the Longhorns won the game in the final inning in dramatic fashion 5-4.

The scoring started early for UT when Loryn Johnson hit a two-run homer in the top of the first that put the Longhorns up 2-0. Starting pitcher, Ragan Blake was undaunted by the early fireworks and settled in to hold UT scoreless for the next five innings. Ryan Kos led off the 3rd with a line drive double which was followed by Kristina Tello bunting safely to first. With runners at the corners, Kos scored on a wild pitch making the score 2-1. Alex Newton tied the game 2-2 with an RBI double to end the scoring in the inning.

Excellent defensive play, combined with strong pitching at crunch time, helped the Bobcats overcome a bases-loaded rally in the top of the 5th. The Longhorns again challenged in the 6h inning, but a double play ended the rally without a score.

In the bottom of the 6th, Alex “Neutron” Newton (3 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI) led off with her second double of the night. Jill Kloesel (1 for 1) entered as a designated player and singled. Jetta Weinheimer batted a loop single to right that brought Newton in for the score and the first led of the game 3-2. Pinch hitter Lacey Duncan (1 for 1, 1RBI) ended the scoring with an RBI single that brought Kloesel in and put Texas State up 4-2 with one inning remaining.

In the top of the 7h Ragan Blake seemed to run out of steam as a walk and a single put two on for Amy Hooks. Hooks teed off on a Blake pitch, launching the ball over the fence and recapturing the lead for Texas 5-4. Katie Garrett entered the game in relief to close out the inning, but the damage was done. The Longhorns closed the door in the bottom of the 7th to preserve the win 5-4.

The Bobcats next travel to Tempe, Arizona for the Kajikawa Classic February 15th.
