The state’s metropolitan dailies are watching Wimberley to see if its school board leaders go through with a threat to withhold $2.3 million in property tax revenue from the state. The Associated Press started the most recent round of articles late last week with its report that that the state education commissioner will indeed dismantle the school district if they don’t make a legally required payment to the state school finance system known as Robin Hood by next week. … The Dallas Morning News, San Antonio Express-News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Austin American-Statesman all print the AP story or run with their own. … The hometown paper meanwhile, the Wimberley View, advances the Wimberley school board’s Tuesday meeting to decide if they will make the payment. If they do, the former Wimberley school district might be absorbed by the San Marcos school district, an outcome to which trustee Neal Askew alluded when he told the newspaper, “I think when we hear who they are going to consolidate us with we will hear that public outcry.” [subscription required]
