ARLINGTON — The Texas State (11-11, 4-5) men’s basketball team fell behind early and were never able to come back as they fell to the University of Texas-Arlington (16-6, 5-4) 99-81, Saturday at Texas Hall. Even with the loss, the Bobcats still lead the all time series record with Texas-Arlington, 25-21.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead just 46 seconds into the game. Two minutes later though, UTA had a 9-4 lead which was a lead they would never give up. Brandon Bush did make it a 2 point game on the next possession with a 3-pointer but things did not go well after that. The Mavericks went on to outscore the Bobcats 43-22 for the rest of the half to take a 52-29 half time lead. UTA shot 53.1% from the field making 17 of 32 shots. Texas State other the other hand only made 8 of 32 shots (25.0%) for the half. Matt Fullenwider led the Bobcats by making 3 of 4 three-pointers and finished the half with 11 points.
In the 2nd half, the teams traded points and with 6:37 remaining the score was 77-57 with UTA leading after Brent Benson made two free throws. The `Cats made their run of the game at that point and narrowed the deficit to 10. They outscored the Mavericks 23-13 for the run and trailed 90-80 with 1:10 remaining in the game. The Bobcats where outscored 9-1 over that last 1:10 though and lost 99-81.
Fullenwider finished the game with 19 points, making 5 of his 10 3-point tries to lead the Bobcats. Bush (13 points) and Brandon Thomas (11 points) were the other scoring leaders. The bright spot was that the Bobcats shot very well from the free throw line. They made 23 of 35 (71.4%) from the charity stripe on the night.
The Bobcats remain on the road for their next contest and will play McNeese State.
