Lumberjacks hand Bobcat men their 10th loss of last 11

NACOGDOCHES – The Texas State (10-10, 3-4) men’s basketball team started off strong but eventually fell to the Lumberjacks from Stephen F. Austin (16-3, 4-2), 81-63 Wednesday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Bobcats have now lost 10 of their last 11 games and their seventh in a row against SFA.

Texas State looked sharp early on as they took 10-4 lead with 16:16 to play in the first half. Stephen F. Austin turned things around and used a 16-3 run to take a 24-14 lead with 7:24 left until halftime. The Bobcats managed to come within three (28-25) with 4:25 left when Brent Holder hit a 3-pointer. At halftime, the Lumberjacks were holding a 8 point lead 38-30. The big difference in the half was free throws. SFA made 13 of 17 (76.5%) while the Bobcats only managed to make 5 of 9 (55.6%). Chris Agwumaro led the team at the half with 6 points while freshman Ty Gough led all rebounders with 5 boards.

Brandon Bush opened the 2nd half with a 3-pointer to come within 5 points but the Lumberjacks steadily increased their lead and held a 17 point advantage (62-45) with 7:13 left in the game. The `Cats tried to make it game when they went on a 9-2 run to make the score 64-54 with 4:11 left. The SFA lead never fell below 9 though and they pulled away for the 81-63 victory.

Ryan White was the only Bobcat to score in double digits as he led the team with 13 points. Gough led the team with nine rebounds. Junior guard Brandon Bush, who ranks 3rd in the conference with 15.0 points per game and 7th in rebounding with 7.3 rebounds per game had 9 points and 3 rebounds for the game. Texas State came into the contest averaging a league best 84.6 points per game but was held to its lowest point total of the season. They had not been held to fewer than 70 all season. The Bobcats shot just 33.9 percent from the field against the Lumberjacks 46.8. From the free throw line the `Cats were 17-30 (56.7%) for the night, while SFA finished 31-45 (68.9%).

The Bobcats will face the Bearcats from Sam Houston State Saturday in a double-header. The Bobcat women’s team is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip and the men will follow right after that games ends around 4 p.m.
