Texas State women continue to rock the Southland

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas State (11-7, 5-0) women’s basketball team were challenged by the Islanders from Texas A&M Corpus Christi (6-11, 3-1) early on but pulled away in the 2nd half for a 73-52 victory on Stripes Court at the American Bank Center. The game featured the conferences top offense (Texas State – 83.0 ppg) against the conferences top defense (A&M-Corpus Christi 58.3 ppg). Texas State’s 21 point victory was just below their league leading average scoring margin of 23.2 points a game.

A&M-Corpus Christi started off hot and built up an early 7 point lead as they went up 11-4 at the 13:35 mark of the 1st half. The Bobcats only made 2 shots from the field and committed 4 turnovers during this run. The ‘Cats found their rhythm after that and took the lead with 5:13 left the 1st half when Kim Cessna hit a 3-pointer to go up 25-22. Texas State did not give up the lead for the rest of the half which ended with the Bobcats leading 36-30. Texas State’s big advantage in the 1st half was points in the paint as they outscored A&M-Corpus Christi 18-8 from the inside. Ashley Cole led the Bobcats in the 1st half with 15 points.

The Islanders went on an 8-2 run to start the 2nd half and tied the score at 38 with 17:32 left. The game remained close as the teams went back and fourth and with 11:18 left in the game, the Bobcats held on to a 3 point lead 45-42. The next 2 minutes and 10 seconds decided the game as five different Texas State players scored during a 12-0 run to take a 57-42 lead with 9:08 left in the game. After that run, the Bobcat’s lead never fell below 11 as they outscored the Islanders 37-22 for the half to win by 21 points, 73-52. The ‘Cats continued their dominance in the paint as they outscored the Islanders 24-8 from that range for the half. The Bobcats also held a 28-5 advantage for the half in points off of turnovers, 2nd chance points and fast break points.

For the game, points in the paint (42-16 Texas State advantage) and 2nd chance points (18-5 Texas State advantage) were the difference in the game between these two Southland Conference unbeaten teams. Texas State also out-rebounded the Islanders 49-28 including a 20-4 advantage on the offensive glass. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Islanders who are now 3-1 in conference play while Texas State improves to 5-0 in the league.

Texas State will now return home to battle the Roadrunners from UTSA (11-6, 3-1) Saturday at 2 pm.
