Rattler's boys basketball rolls Seguin at home

Sports Reporter

SAN MARCOS –- Tuesday night’s 25-5A district matchup between San Marcos High School and Seguin High School was a tale of two teams headed in different direction. The Rattlers came into the contest with hopes of a third straight playoff appearance still in tact, while the Matadors have lost 10 of their last 14 after a 7-2 start to the season.

The game was nip and tuck between the two district foes through the first half. The hometown Rattlers opened up a slight two-point advantage, 14-12, after the first eight minutes of play and then extended its halftime lead by one, 24-21, with a 10-9 spread in the second quarter.

“We opened the game with a lot of energy and withstood a run by Seguin to close the gape in the first half to 24-21,” SMHS head boy’s basketball coach Robert Shivers said. “We came out in the second half and pressed the issue and created a number of turnovers to take a 13-point lead after the third quarter.”

“This was a good win to keep pace with the other top teams in the district for a potential playoff spot,” he added.

The Rattlers recorded a number of easy transition buckets and layups en route to a 21-11 run to open the second half. SMHS went into the fourth quarter leading 45-32.

San Marcos edged past the visiting Matadors 10-9 over the final eight minutes to secure its third district win of the season, 55-41. SMHS improved to 18-11 overall on the year with a 3-5 district mark.

The Rattlers were well balanced on offense as three players finished in double digits. Shane McBryde, Lee Bryant and Lauren Morales each finished with a game-high 10 points, while Aaron Canady was just two points away from double figures with eight.

Blake Rabe paced the Matadors with a game-high 21 points in the loss. Seguin failed to put another player in double digits Tuesday night.

The win also marked the start of the second round of district games. The Rattlers will need to pick up another win or two to secure a playoff spot, including a win over Friday night’s opponent Austin Akins, which beat SMHS in the first meeting.
