Pflugerville – Hays High School traveled to Pflugerville on Tuesday night, braving the frigid temperatures to take on district foe, Connally High School. HHS goalie Danielle Snyder faced off all four shots sent her way as the Lady Rebels pitched their second straight district shutout in a 5-0 victory. HHS had opened district play with a 9-0 pounding of Austin Del Valle High School on Saturday at home.
“The cold weather didn’t get in the way of our focus and consistency, and I am really proud of the effort,” HHS head girl’s soccer coach Dorothy Ortiz said. “The girls played very well together this evening. They worked hard the second half and their level of conditioning played a big role in our win.”
Samantha Gonzalez hit Ashlee Briggerman with an assist in the first half to give Hays a 1-0 lead. Briggerman’s first of two goals Tuesday night came with 31:04 left to play in the half. And while HHS was held scoreless the remainder of the way it proved to be the game winner.
Briggerman kicked off the second-half scoring frenzy with another goal assisted by Gonzalez at the 19:34 mark. Then a minute-and-a-half later Bailey Holmes hit her first of three second-half goals to put HHS up 3-0. Arielle Timmons assisted on the goal, which gave the Lady Rebels some insurance.
Then just 60 seconds later Holmes got some help from Briggerman on her second goal of the night, which pushed the lead to four and for all intents and purposes put the district game away despite just over 17 minutes left to play in the second half. Bailey topped off her hat trick with an unassisted goal with 11:14 remaining in the half.
Snyder faced just two shots on goal in the first half and two more in the second half as the Lady Rebels defense did not even allow Connally many clean looks at the net all night long.
The Lady Rebels will try to make it three straight district wins this season when HHS plays host to Lehman High School on Friday, Jan. 25 at home. Game time is set for 7:45 p.m.Email | Print
