Goodnight's name moving to new campus

Reporter and Anchor

The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District board decided unanimously Monday evening to allow the name of Goodnight Junior High to move with the faculty and students to its new location.

The former San Marcos High School location on Hwy 123 is being renovated into the new middle school. When completed, the school will house the current Goodnight staff and students taking the name Goodnight Middle School.

The current Goodnight location on Peter Garza Drive will be made into an elementary school that will receive a new name to be decided by the board one year before its completion date of August 2009.

Owen Goodnight was a graduate of Hardin-Simmons University and later played professional football with the Cleveland Rams and the Chicago Bears. Goodnight began teaching in San Marcos in 1951 and remained the head coach until his death in 1967.

Known as a Texas coaching legend, Goodnight was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Honor.

  1. Way to go school board. The name should stay with the students and staff as that is the heart and soul of the school.
