SAN MARCOS — The Texas State University baseball team is getting ready to begin their ninth season under Head Coach Ty Harrington on Feb. 22 when they face Stephen F. Austin University in the first game of the Texas-Pan American tournament.

The Bobcats finished 2007 with a 37-23 record overall and a 20-10 record in Southland Conference play (2nd/West Division; 3rd/Overall) and were the SLC Tournament Runner-Ups. The Bobcats finished the year producing an Academic All-American and cracked the national polls for the first time in Texas State school history. Last year was Harrington’s top finish since taking over the squad back in 2000.

Harrington (266 wins 208 losses) has led Texas State to eight straight Southland Conference post-season tournaments and an appearance in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. This years team will surely miss 1B David Wood (All-Southland Conference 2nd Team & Coastal Plain League All-Decade Team), OF Aaron Garza (All-Southland Conference 3rd Team & SLC All-Tournament Team), pitcher Jason Baca (All-Southland Conference 3rd Team) and all-everything pitcher, Justin Fiske who was All-Southland Conference 1st Team & an Academic All-American. Losing players like these will hurt but this year’s team has lots of young returning talent and will once again make a run at the Conference championship.

Thomas Field the Jr. shortstop from Hewitt Texas made the 2nd Team All-Southland Conference team last season and will lead this year’s Bobcat team. Field tied Matt Schnabel’s (1997) record for runs scored in a single season last year with 61 runs. He was among the team leaders in doubles (17), Assist (148) and fielding double plays (30). Other key players will be So. designated hitter, Paul Goldschmidt from The Woodlands, Texas who was an Honorable Mention selection All-Southland Conference. Paul had a .338 batting average with 47 hits, 4 doubles, 1 home run and 22 RBIs in only 37 games last year. Laurn Randell , the So. outfielder from McCallum High School in Austin Texas started 52 games out in center field had a .427 on base percentage last season. Adam Witek the Jr. infielder from Clemens High School in Schertz, Texas had 24 stolen bases last season. Mike Hart the Jr. pitcher from Staten Island, N.Y will lead the hurlers as he finished last year with 91.1 Innings Pitched, 87 strike outs in the 16 games he started. Eric Weaver the Sr. relief pitcher from Deer Park, Texas had 30 appearances last year and limited the opposing batters to only a .212 batting average. Finally, Steven Siers the Sr. relief pitcher from Georgetown, Texas appeared in 19 games last year.

Coach Harrington continued to build the program with one of his largest and most athletic recruiting classes that he has ever had. The `Cats added five junior college and six high school standouts to the team which included five right-handed pitchers, one left-handed hurler, two outfielders and infielders and one catcher.

This years schedule will be very competitive as it will feature games against Houston, TCU,Rice and Big XII opponents Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor. Bobcat Field will be a great place to be as the Bobcats go through their 55 games. With the returning talent, this should be another awesome season for Bobcat baseball.
