AUSTIN — San Marcos High School (17-10, 2-4) suffered one of its worse district setbacks Friday night at Austin Westlake, but the Rattlers bounced back Tuesday night in the Capital City with an impressive 74-48 win over Anderson High School (6-14, 2-4) despite a sizable disadvantage in the front court.

“We played a solid game last night,” Rattlers head coach Robert Shivers said. “We outscored them 45-24 in the second half to pull away. Our defensive intensity was excellent all night long and we rebounded the ball extremely well.”

The hometown Trojans held a significant size advantage in the paint, but Shivers said he was impressed with his forwards in Tuesday night’s win 26-point victory.

Chris Garcia and Lee Bryant did an outstanding job inside against a much taller front line,” he said. “Shane McBryde, Lauren Morales and Deshon Johnson did a good job of attacking on offense and Gentry Contreras ran the team smoothly on offense.”

Anderson, like SMHS, entered the game needing a win to stay viable in the playoff hunt. AHS were a game up on the Rattlers with a 2-3 district mark, with San Marcos sporting a 1-4 mark after the loss to Westlake.

The Trojans defended their home court well, at least through the first eight minutes of play Tuesday night as AHS opened up a two-point lead, 15-13, after the first quarter.

The Rattlers picked it up defensively in the second quarter, while the offense remained steady. SMHS used a 16-9 quarter run to take a slim five-point advantage, 29-24, into the locker room at halftime.

San Marcos’ offense really came alive in the second half as the Rattlers posted 23 points in the third quarter and then another 22 points over the final eight minutes of play, while the defense held the Trojans to 17 points in the third and just seven in the fourth.

Shane McBryde posted a game-high 17 points as the Rattlers improved to 2-4 to keep their hopes of a third straight playoff appearance alive. Lauren Morales chipped in with 14 points, while Deshon Johnson added another 12 in the win.
