Bobcat men even conference record on the hardcourt

CONWAY, Ark. – The Texas State Bobcats got 51 points from their bench to defeat the Bears from Central Arkansas 78-72 Saturday at the Farris Center in Conway, Arkansas. The win improves the Bobcats record to 8-7 overall and 1-1 in Conference play while Central Arkansas falls to 11-5 overall and they also now have a 1-1 conference record.

The first half went back and fourth with six ties, and twelve lead changes. The largest lead by either team during the half was four points. The half ended with the Bobcats leading 32-30 even though they did not attempt a single free throw for the half. The Bears went 0-10 from 3-point land.

The Bobcats never trailed in the 2nd half as they built up a 51-40 lead with 14:49 left to go. Central Arkansas fought back to get as close as 54-52 with 10:49 but Texas State went on another run to build up a 10 point lead. The Bears pulled close by hitting a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left, making the score 74-72. After the shot, the Bears immediately fouled Brandon Bush who hit both free throws to make it 76-72. Central Arkansas missed the ensuing 3-pointer and Dylan Moseley made 2 more free throws after being fouled to bring the final score to 78-72 Texas State. After the slow start, the Bobcats finished up hitting 16 of 27 from the charity stripe. Central Arkansas stayed ineffective at 3-point shooting, hitting 2-9 for the half and finishing 2-19 for the game from beyond the arc.

Bush came off the bench to become the leading scorer (21 pts making 10-12 free throws) and tied for the team high in rebounds (8 rebound – 5 were offensive rebounds). Other key players were guard Brandon Thomas (13 pts on 6-6 shooting, 8 rebounds, 3 steals) and guard Corey Jefferson (12 pts, 4 rebounds, 5 assist, 3 steals),

The Bobcats are now tied for 1st in the Western Division with Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin all with 1-1 conference records. Texas State returns to Strahan Coliseum for a three-game home stand that begins Thursday, Jan. 17. against the Lions from Southeastern Louisiana (9-6, 1-1).
