San Marcos boys continue district stumbles

Sports Reporter

SAN MARCOS – The San Marcos High School boy’s basketball team returned to its home hardwood on Friday night to play host to Bastrop High School. The Rattlers are now streaking, but unfortunately it’s in the wrong direction.

SMHS has now dropped two straight 25-5A matchups after suffering a 16-point, 76-60, setback at home. The visitors used height to their advantage both offensively and defensively in the victory. The Rattlers were unable to get to the basket with any dribble penetration consistently, and had to rely on their outside shooting, which left SMHS short for most of the night.

Bastrop High came out on fire Friday night, leading by 11, 16-5, after the first quarter of play. The Rattlers started to recover offensively in the second, but the visiting Bears picked up their game as well, outscoring the home team 24-16 to take a comfortable 40-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.

SMHS did manage to start cutting into the lead in the second half. The Rattlers outscored Bastrop 20-14 in the third and even came within single digits midway through the fourth quarter, but San Marcos didn’t have the staying power as BHS pulled out a narrow 22-19 advantage over the final eight minutes of play to move to 3-0 in the district race, while the Rattlers fell below the .500 mark for the first time this season at 1-2.

Aaron Canady was the only Rattler to finish in double digits, with a team-high 10 points. Shane McBryde just missed double figures with nine points. Lauren Morales, who has been the leading scorer the last two outings was held to a mere six points.

San Marcos will try to bounce back Tuesday, Jan. 8 with a road trip to the Capital City, where the Rattlers will face off against Austin High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:15.
