From staff reports

Local social service agencies’ annual scramble for city funds usually ends with at least one vanload of elderly residents arriving at City Hall to protest denied or reduced appropriations. The process starts with an application due Feb. 8 for fiscal year 2008-09, which begins Oct. 1.

The application can be downloaded here or agencies may pick up an application from the Finance Department in the Municipal Building, 630 E. Hopkins, in the lobby at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins, or from the Library, 625 E. Hopkins.

Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on February 8, 2007 at the Finance Department. No late submissions will be considered.

The Human Services Advisory Board will review applications in March and April and make its recommendations to the city council by May 16. The City Council will decide allocations in its budget process that will be concluded in early September, 2008. Funding will be for the fiscal year from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009.

The City Council has allocated approximately $400,000 from the General Fund to assist programs of local social service agencies in recent budgets. City funding may not exceed 50 percent of the funding sources for applicants, assistant finance director Steve Parker said.

  1. This is good information. If your schedule allows – I would also like to see some information on the services provided by these groups. Does the city ever follow up to see how the money is used? After all it is our tax money the city leaders are giving away.

Sorta of a back door social tax.

    Thank you,

    Hattie
