Roundball woes continue for Rattlers

SAN MARCOS – After a disappointing trip to the Capital City last weekend San Marcos High School was looking forward to a return to the home hardwood on Wednesday night as the Rattlers tipped off the new year with district foe Austin Akins.

SMHS was looking to shake off a poor offensive outing in a 18-point loss to Houston Lamar in its final game of the Capital City Classic on Saturday. The Rattlers shot just 27 percent from the floor two games after posting 104 points in an earlier win during the tournament.

It looked as though the Rattlers were headed back in the right direction after posting 19 points in the first quarter and then another 14 in the second, but the offense went south again as San Marcos managed just seven points in the third quarter before closing out the game with 18 in the fourth in a 70-58 loss to the visiting Eagles.

The two 25-5A foes battled point for point in the opening eight minutes of play as the two squads went into the second quarter tied 19-all. AHS edged past the Rattlers by two in the next quarter to take a slim 35-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Akins doubled up the hometown Rattlers 14-7 in the third quarter to take a nine-point lead, 49-40, into the final eight minutes of play. San Marcos found it’s offensive touch again in the fourth quarter, but Akins
managed to post its highest offensive output of the night as well, winning the fourth 21-18.

“Akins went on a 10-0 to start the third quarter and we never really recovered,” Rattlers head boy’s basketball coach Robert Shivers said of the second-half start. “We had the ball with 1:30 to go (in the game) down 63-58 and did not score and that was the closest that we came (the rest of the way).”

It was the first district loss for the Rattlers, who came into the matchup with a 1-0 district mark after a 55-47 road win over Seguin High School back on Dec. 15. San Marcos fell to 16-7 overall, and the Rattlers will look to get back into the win column on Friday, Jan. 4 when SMHS plays host to Bastrop High School in another 25-5A contest.
