Redskins too much for Rattlers in Capital City Classic

ROUND ROCK — Basketball coaches have often said that the key moments in a game are the opening and the closing few minutes. That couldn’t have been more true for San Marcos High School in a 57-39 loss to Lamar High School, which eliminated the Rattlers from the Capital City Classic on Saturday. LHS opened with an 11-2 run in the first quarter and then closed out the 16-point win with a 10-2 run in the fourth quarter.

The Redskins got 41 points from their Josh duo. Josh Bonney, a highly recruited hoopster averaging 20.6 points a game during the tournament, posted 25 points, while Josh Leuchtag went for 16 in the victory, including four treys and seven rebounds.

San Marcos had plenty of looks at the basket in the first half, but the Rattlers just could not muster up any offensive production through the first 16 minutes of the contest. SMHS averaged just one point per minute and trailed by 20 at the break, 36-16.

Lamar outscored San Marcos 21-9 in the first quarter and then owned a 15-7 advantage in the second eight minutes of play on Saturday.

The Rattlers did manage to rebound in the third quarter and started a comeback effort with a 10-7 advantage out of the break. SMHS trailed 43-26 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Lauren Morales led the way for the Rattlers with seven points. Cameron Austin chipped in with six, while Chad Arch, Ben Schneider and Deshon Johnson each posted five points in the loss.

With the loss, the Rattlers fell to 14-6 on the year, while the Redskins raised their season record to 14-4.

San Marcos will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 2 when the Rattlers play host to Akins High School. The district matchup is scheduled to tip off at 8:15.
