CHUCK NASH BLOG: 1ST Annual Responsible Parenting Initiative Awards Ceremony

Last August, Chuck Nash Auto Group and the local Head Start Program were approached by Akzo Nobel with the National Benevolence Program Responsible Parenting Initiative. Chuck Nash Auto Group agreed to become a partner in the program with the local Head Start. Both staffs donated their time and talents to award a local San Marcos family a refurbished vehicle. One key ingredient to accomplish our goal was the support from the local businesses, to invest in our community and our children. We reached out to the San Marcos businesses to begin a rewarding tradition and received a remarkable response.

Community Action Head Start Program nominated families who meet the criteria set by the organization; notified the family of the nomination. The families who accept the nomination complete and return an acceptance packet. Meanwhile, Chuck Nash Auto Group employees donated their time, labor and talent to refurbish a vehicle; reviewed each nominee’s acceptance packet and their level of involvement (provided by the Head Start agency) and selected the recipient (the family names were anonymous to the employees). On Nov. 9, the technicians choose a family. Attached is the letter from the mother.

This year’s winner is Melissa Whetstone of San Marcos. On Monday, December 10, 2007, Melissa was asked to come to Chuck Nash Auto Group for an interview, but instead managers from all Chuck Nash departments and representatives from Head Start surprised her with the announcement that she would be driving home in the vehicle on Wednesday. Melissa had to complete some title paperwork and was presented with a gift.

An awards dinner & ceremony was held on Dec. 12 at the dealership’s body shop during which Melissa & 3-year old daughter Lila were awarded with the keys to a newly refurbished 1995 Buick Roadmaster – along with many other gifts and incentives including 6 month’s of car insurance from Farmer’s, a car seat from Farm Bureau, one year car wash membership from Conley’s Car Wash and an emergency car kit from Time Warner. Carl Brandt of CB Songz donated his time as DJ for the event. Over 30 local businesses provided parts, services, tires, gift certificates, gas cards and toys for Melissa and Lila. Blue Santa also made a surprise visit to present Lila with a few early Christmas gifts. Chili’s generously donated a fajita dinner for 100 people. Luby’s, Jason’s Deli & Century Tel also contributed to the dinner. Special guest speakers included Mayor Narvaiz, Chuck Nash, dealer principal of Chuck Nash Auto Group and Carole Belver, executive director of Community Action Inc. Many community partners were in attendance, the employees and technicians of Chuck Nash who were involved and the local Head Start.

The National Benevolence Program works with their local charitable organizations to help them identify an individual or group that is in need of a vehicle. The program’s mission is to generate good will at the local level while improving and promoting the image of the collision repair industry. The program achieves its mission by presenting refurbished cars to deserving individuals or organization during the holiday season.

LETTER FROM THE RECIPIENT OF THE RESPONSIBLE PARENTING AWARD:

I am a 23 year old single mother of one very sweet little girl Lila. She is 3 years old and she is the reason why I try everyday to make our lives better than the next. I am both mother and father to Lila which can be extremely emotionally and financially challenging. My daughter’s father moved out of state to Washington and has not made any effort to contact her. I refuse to let her know my daily stress, so she can enjoy her childhood. After thinking for so long I wouldn’t be recognized for trying my best to get ahead in life, I received a nomination for a really great chance to get a “Responsible Parenting Award.”

When I received the nomination packet, I was very close to crying; I realized that being there for my daughter is a privilege I will never take for granted. This award is a wonderful opportunity to get ahead and achieve my plans to create a successful future for my daughter.

I have a 1984 Buick LeSabre that constantly required repairs. My car is a constant source of worry for me. I have planned for a long time to become a physical therapist which means a lot of school, work and driving.

My car is causing me more trouble than benefit, when driving with my daughter I want to know that my car is safe and secure. The car has well over 250,000 miles and it is in need of repairs. This car takes away money I have been saving for school that I hope to be starting in summer and money that I could be putting away for the future. Receiving an automobile would help me be self-sufficient in so many ways. I would have a higher quality of life with my daughter and not constantly worry if I am able to drive to work, do errands and drive to drop-off and pick-up Lila from school. I think owning a car that is more reliable will help me be healthier. The last few years have been extremely stressful. I have had my gallbladder removed, breathing problems and anxiety attacks… all of which my doctor says are related to stress. I feel fortunate to have found employment with a work schedule that fits with Lila’s school hours. Any extra relief is appreciated and gravely respected.
Sincerely, Melissa Whetstone

  1. This is a great example of how businesses make a difference every day in San Marcos. Business’s with a heart that care about this community and the people that live in it should be supported! This is exactly the reason Chuck Nash received the prestigious “Business of the Year” award at the annual banquet and awards presentation in October. Thanks, Chuck, for caring about San Marcos and for MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
